Petrol stations seem to be the worst culprits for this, I always pay by cash for fuel now after getting caught out.

that means it was USED on xmas eve, not cloned on xmas eve.

Does it matter when the cloning actually took place?? The OP has had is account wiped out regardless.

well yes considering OP is so sure it was xmas eve, and that halifax is to blame.
  • Phone Halifax, threaten to close every account you have with them if they dont get it sorted out ASAP,then once everything is sorted out, move your account to another Bank or BS anyway since they ruined your Xmas
I have a deep burning indifference

...a bit like cutting your nose off to spite your face?
Was it not the fault of the criminal whom committed the crime? Halifax can't stop the cloning of the card, the technology that Halifax uses is provided by Visa, maybe they are the party that the OP wants’ to be kicking off with and complaining too?

  • This has happened to a friend of mine over the Xmas period too. The card was cloned from a local ATM machine. The technology criminals use is amazing.

Sadly, although my friend will get all her money back she has been told it will take several weeks. This is because her bank (also the Halifax) have to claim it from their insurers.

She had over £1k cash withdrawn from her account.

No, it's because they need to verify with each individual retailer how the transactions took place to ensure that it was actually fraud.

A pain in the backside for all concerned, but a necessary evil to prevent others shouting 'fraud' when it isn't.

For what it's worth, I once had my wallet stolen (taken when I put my coat down in an office I was working in out of hours, someone must have followed me in or found another door open) and both my Halifax debit card and AmEx credit card both had amounts spent on them - and I was pretty sharp at reporting the cards stolen once I had realised. I suspect the amounts spent were below the store's floor level, and back in 2002 (or thereabouts) it also predated Chip & PIN.

Halifax were very good in getting it sorted, think it only took around a week or so, and they made it clear I would not lose out on interest or fees for going overdrawn (which, as it happened, it didn't take me in the red anyway). I had a crime reference number because of the theft, so it is possible that may have speeded the investigation along.

For the record AmEx were pretty good too in investigatng and refunding me.

I would imagine that "suspicious" transactions are detected by computer, and in the current economic climate the computer isn't going to pick up on everyone who goes overdrawn, whether you have been a perfect customer for 15 years or not.

Scary stuff though this cloning business...

It was xmas eve, a lot of people will be mass buying late xmas presents so they most probably didn't suspect anything....

If it wasn't fraud and the bank blocked my card when I was trying to buy a lot of presents on xmas eve I would be pretty peeved off. :o
