Help broadband speeds

Hi.
We currently have Sky broadband as we thought it would be simpler to have tv and boadband etc with the same company. I am now getting really annoyed with the speed of our broadband connection (512 only I think). Think Sky have said that is the best we can get because of the BT exchange distance or something. My husband gets our broadband paid for by his work so we don't have to have a really cheap package, any ideas? Would we be better to ditch Sky and go with another company? Is there any way of finding out which speeds we could get from other companies? Is cable the only way that the BT exchange won't slow things down?
Thanks guys!

Enter your postcode or 'phone number here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php then select BT ADSL to see what speed you can expect. It's only a guide though and not guaranteed, depends on lots of factors, distance from the exchange, as Sky have mentioned, being one of them.
I'm about 2 miles from exchange, in the sticks, and obtain an actual speed of approx. 3.8Mb/s non LLU through BT line and equipment at the exch.0 -
Sky is one of the cheaper packages about so unless there not maxing out your line for some strange reason I would stay put.
The best thing you can do is what oldagetraveller said and put your details into sam knows and see what speeds your line is then capable of.
You could then run a speedtest at http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html to make sure you are achieving those speeds.
If you are then its because you live so far from the exchange and there's nothing you can really do to make it go faster.
I'm in the same boat as you myself and can only just get over half a meg but I would rather have something then nothing!0 -

Scroll down and find the router statistics button, paste the results on here and someone should be able to give you some practical advise. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

http://192.168.0.1 should work for both Netgear and Sagem. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
Thanks for all your replies. have copied and pasted my computer stats so hope someone can advise further. This is from my laptop, also have PC upstairs.
Basically just want to find out how we can get a faster connection, don't mind paying a bit more as my husbands work pay for our broadband!

I mean going to samknows and posting back the results and taking a speedtest.
If the speedtest pretty much matches what samknows says then there's very little you can do.0
