I learned that christmas doesn't have to be stressful.........

That Aunt Bessies roast pots, parsnips, and swede mash, and frozen sproats are every bit as good as the 'real thing'.

And also for the first year I bought a half turkey crown from the local butcher sourced from a local farm, cooked the day before, sliced and warmed through on the bottom of the oven while the roasties were cooking. Delish!

Dont buy a turkey from Waitrose .......... it was horrid .
Ditto my turkey crown from Sainsbury's.

Been preparing Christmas Lunch every year for donkey's years so definitely don't blame the cook! :A

    Dry, tough tasteless meat, BOOOH!
Luckily, just for daughter and I this year and we're not big meat eaters and enjoy all the trimmings, would have been really embarassed serving it to guests!

We don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.

I learnt that old people will always find something to talk about, even if it is flu jabs.

And old people also like over-cooked veg! We did 2 lots of brocoli; me and my sister like it fairly crunchy, but sister's bf's mum had it boiled for about 15 mins.

  • 1. Juniper is bloomin' strong.

When the recipe says 4 crushed berries per 1kg venison fillet - believe it, don't double it because 'they're so tiny'.

    2. Figure out how long sauce flour takes to cook into the gravy before pouring it all over the perfect roasties. Wahhhhh.

Just a note about turkeys, I got my turkey crown from Aldi, it was about 2.4 kg, cost £15 and it was gorgeous, we've fed 5 and still got half left :D

I part cooked it yesterday (meant to cook it fully but I was so scared of burning it that I had the oven on far too low :o :rotfl:) I cooked it the rest of the way today, sliced it, put it in a casserole dish with turkey gravy and put it in the bottom of the oven while I cooked everything else, absolutely gorgeous :j

  • Great idea for a thread! :)

I learned that Duchy originals organic beef gravy is not very nice and in no way compares to homemade. (Yes, lazy option but bought on impulse on Xmas eve as it was reduced to clear - 60p in Waitrose and because I remebered that John Torode said it was delicious.) No John - it doesn't smell or taste of anything much at all!
