OH and I were planning on getting a new bathroom in the sales and freezer for the kitchen. But now getting a bit worried if we place an order, the firm could be in administration a week later and no goods arrive. All this uncertainty and speculation about who could go under next isn't giving us confidence to spend at the moment!

Just make sure that you buy the item on a credit card, so that you are covered by the Chapter 75 protection that the card provides.

In my area on New Years Eve, I passed five THRESHER/HADDOWS/VICTORIA WINE shops and there was one or two customers in each of them. Surely they cannot have long before they go under. I remember when the queue was forty deep at the off licence at New Year. Think people just stock up at supermarket now.

Last time i was in Haddows they only had about 3 brands of beer for sale by the case and they were all crap, they cost more and offer less than supermarkets so sod them.

I hope Focus don't go - just opened a store here - very handy!!! (mind you it has been empty when I've been in it!).

DFS are a strange beast - they must have huge finances behind them as they advertise very heavily and ask you get it all on tick!!!

Focus are the biggest con merchants ever, their prices are most often 3 times what you can get elsewhere but they have that advertising pitch about refunding the difference if you find the same cheaper elsewhere what a Focus branded product in wilkinson ? some people really fall low when hearing some claims these shops make.

B&Q is damn expensive on many items I'd just buy power tools online for what they want

Focus went here a while ago, never very good. Wickes are there now not much better ??? Homebase did belong to Sainsburys, again never rated them either.... they could get away with being okay at one time, not now I wouldn't have thought. B & Q have the D I Y game pretty much sewn up round here.

The Wickes branches where I am rely on the Building Trade.

They however have competition from Screwfix, Plumbase and smaller supplies.

If that's the case it makes you wonder how much they lost when they were selling Mamma Mia for £7-£9.
It's called a loss leader. The supermarkets know they'll lose money on it but hope that people will also buy other things whilst there anyway.

they do the same with cheap petrol offers too.

I think there should be legislation against it. Unfair of Tesco / Asda / etc. to sell top titles cheaper than the equivalent independent retailer can even buy it for. Especially if they are unfairly screwing the competition by charging less than they pay for it.

We still need real bookshops, real music stores - as opposed to half an aisle just behind the nappy section.

I read the first paragraph as the usual mewbie tongue in cheek joke post, but the second paragraph suggests that you're actually being serious?

It's up to the retailer how much of a profit/loss they want to make surely? Only becomes a matter of legislation when one company has a monopoly, and it looks like supermarkets will always compete with each other so no problem.

Sod the independents, if you want more choice buy online, a book, dvd or cd does not need to be picked up and examined in real life land :p
