Shows exactly how much of our economic 'success' was based on nothing more than cheap credit.

The real pain starts when all that credit has to be repaid, right now we're just suffering the effects of an abnormal credit bubble going away. Throw in the need to pay back debt and the economy will take much longer to recover than normal.

How many more are unable to pay their rent?

The Quarter Days are the traditional days in English law when rent payments become due. These are important to landlords as it is still the practice today that commercial rents become due on the quarter days, quarterly in advance. They were taken from the Christian holy days; four specified days when certain payments are due.

Would it help these companies if local rates were reduced? Would this mean Brown actually doing something, rather than talking about doing something.

I have to agree with the comments that the likes of Zavvi isn't a viable business anymore. HMV is the same - these products are increasingly being purchased online cheaper and easier. What is the point of going to the shop?

Some people still want to go, but surely the numbers will decrease as more and more people turn to the internet. In 5-10 years will ANYBODY buy a CD from a shop?? Infact will anyone buy a CD period!

I don't think I have ever bought anything from Zavvi...we don't have one of those in our high street and I refuse to go shopping in Ipswich (horrible place...far too busy which makes it a nightmare with the children).

Same thing with Whittards and Officers Club - we don't have them here and have never shopped in them although a neighbour loves getting her coffee on special trips to Ippo from Whittards.

Although I have never shopped in these places, I do feel for the employees who will be finding themselves out of work just before christmas.

Goodness knows what we are going to do without Woolworths, they are the main shop to go to in Felixstowe for school uniform, DVD's, CD's, games etc.....think I will be doing more online shopping in the future (and so will others, or they will go up to Ipswich) which could have a knock on effect on the other shops in our little town centre.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Just announced on Sky News. No link yet.

2500 permanent employees and 1000 temps.

Never thought I'd see the end of the Virgin Megastores but they were retail dinosaurs I suppose. Maybe it'll help the likes of HMVstay afloat.

Who are Zavvi? I've never heard of them
