It's actually on Axes Lane which is a bit further on. MrsE, if you're driving from Salfords towards Outwood, you go past Mason's Bridge Road on the left (signposted for the hospital) and just after that on the left is a sign saying something like "Life Discovery Centre" run by the above-mentioned Mr Fidler. The "castle" is in there set back from the road a bit. It's actually easier to see if you are coming the other way so that it is on your right but there are a lot of farm buildings (silos?) etc so it takes a few passes to see it. If you type Axes Lane into aboutmyplace.co.uk you can see it clearly in birds-eye view on the north side of Axes Lane just to the east of Mason's Bridge Road. It is just to the left of a huge barn. Have fun hunting!

Yes you can see it here.

aerial view was taken before it was built just looks like a building site, but birds eye view you can see it clearly, the 2 cylindrical parts of it.

I am interested to see what happens, I dont think he will tear it down himself. Will they really use force. What if they stand in front of the bull dosers?

I have some land in the country and have been trying for yrs to get permission to build but they always just say no of course its green belt. (85% of the country is).

I don't even want to live there all the time just for holidays in the summer.

I cant even put a park home there.

So although I kind of admire Mr Fidler for his audasity, he should have thought it through better.

So I want to build something underground.

My idea is to bury a big luxury park home, just have entrance and chimney and a few light tunnels for all the windows. But disguise them well. No spotter planes could ever know whats there.
  • Yes lots of people are doing this sort of thing now.

Something like a Hobit hole out of lord of the rings.

Or I like something like the teletubbies house, from the air its invisable.

There is a big comunity online, I will give you the link if you want.

Its a good idea to bury a park home, you would have good insulation get a nice log stove in the middle very warm in winter.
You said about Mr Fidler not thinking it through, well have you? Its not as easy as you think.

What about drainage? How will you suport the roof etc?

    I can see many problems.
  • Very difficult to "hide your tracks" literally.

The whole countryside is now filmed annually down to something the size of an A4 sheet of paper and scanned with computer help.

That is because we are all paying subsidies of (say) 50 GBP per acre to the county's land owners and the system has to be policed.

They do this all the time in Italy, especially in the south. They just pay up a fine, and everythings ok. There was a program on grand designs showing this off to the full. There countryside isn't spoiled,

THis guy was an idiot but planners, conservation officers, listed building authorities often can't see the wood for the trees.

saw the program on it and thought it was funny.

I very much doubt they will notice. Its a big country.

It will only take one day to get a JCB in. Dig a big hole with one pipe coming out at lowest point (its on a hill). Several beams going over the top.

Then after get the park home in with land rover block it up level etc. Connect water and elec etc. Then I will shovel earth on top leaving the main entrance and a few holes for the windows and chimney. Grass will soon grow on top.

OK what other problems do you see?

    I saw it!!!!!

I think I managed to spot it because its winter & the trees have no leaves. Its quite far back off the road, about 200 yards.

Anyway, from the road it doesn't even stand out as being a mock castle, perhaps if you were walking you would notice more, but not many people walk down that road.

How can it be spoiling the greenbelt if people have to go out of their way to spot it?
