I dont think a dirty great castle will qualify as low impact.

Does planning inspector know about policy 52 low impact development?

Or anyone else I would like to know more about it, any links?

These people may know something ......

  • That policy 52 is only in Wales as far as I can see.

Is there something similar in England?

It is easier to get permission for an eco home it should get even easier too.

I would love to have a goat for milk and chickens for eggs, and a bee hive. Your smallholding could be called a land flowing with milk and honey.

Have you heard of building a house out of straw hay bales? Its very cheap and easy to build and excellent insulation.

Be great to have sola panels as the roof and rain water harvesting tank and filters.

Money doesnt grow on trees but water does fall from the sky for free, so why do we pay so much for it?

Yes Ive heard of straw, that posh housing guy on ch4 did a show on it once. Combined with some sort of ancient mortar paste its basically permanent and because its not bricks you can free form the walls to any direction or curve, very innovative and cheap I believe

Solar panels doesnt really fit, they are expensive excluding that scheme available.

It would be wales because large parts of it are basically empty, northern scotland also it should apply if it doesnt. England is where all the people are at
  • There must be something like it in England?

"Grand Designs" (C4) featured such a straw home backing onto a tube line in London, a year or three ago.
[We switched to brick in part because wattle and daub houses were not rat proof and rats as a vector of plague killed half the population - somehow, I don't trust straw]

Anyone got any comments on the "Condem" proposal to hand over the majority of local authority planning decisions to a sort of neighbourhood watch committee - or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

It sounds like it could be even more corrupt than the current system. Give the right people enough money and you could get planning for anything.

PS IS the tudor castle still there?

I started this thread exactly 2 years ago. I have lost count of the amount of times someone said it will be demolished this time for sure.

It is still there and no bulldozers in sight!

Neither is brick, wood, concrete or any other form of house with services and windows and egresses in it.

Also the rats that carried plague were black rats and are almost extinct in the UK.

Stop making rubbish up and posting it as fact.

I've got a wooden shed that is not rat proof - they can chew through inch thick planks given the time.

I have a block built house, which is rat proof, though one has to be careful with the soffits (the horizontal board behind the gutter board under the roof overhang) or harvest mice will climb up the pebble dash and get into the loft (chewed electrics?). Where little mice lead tree rats (grey squirrels) will follow.

I agree a lot of housing depends on attention to detail. When you can show me a 100 year old house made of large bales - you will be able to justify your assertions too.

Is it true you are never more than a few meres from a rat in the UK?
