Hey Basher - you are certainly sounding more positive today:j Be warned MSE is addictive and the folks on here are helpful. A word of warning though if you do transfer your debt to a 0% balance transfer card, don't ever make a late payment - I did once and ended up being charged a lot of interest. Thankfully the last bill coincided with a payment from my solicitor and now all my credit cards have been paid off in full and I am facing the New Year debt free:j

If you ever get stuck with only a few tins of food and a tomato or something else that seems odd, you can always go onto the Moneysaving Oldstyle board with a list of the ingredients that you have as someone on there will always come up with something.

Hope the insurance gets sorted out soon.

Wishing you a Happy Christmas and Happier New Year.

Sounds like you had a positive day and have saved a few quid.Myself if the bill is only going to be £700 and it will be a good job I'd go for it but only on the grounds that he'll def have it ready. As you can't afford to keep on losing money. It may end up as a 50/50 accident anyway..nothings clear cut.The risk you are taking in having it fixed yourself you may not get the money back..small risk in order to work.

yes hes a friend of the family he is good at his job and has a reputable business so i trust him to do a good job he wudn't lie as i'd have im!!! lol!!!

  • im proud of you , you doing great

please do concider the credit card , the maths is this

at the minute you pay 50 quid , approx 20 is interest
if you swop its the full 50 quid coming off the bill a difference of approx 260 a year

another way to look at it is this , if you swop you will owe £1200 dec 2009
if you dont you will owe £1540

yet another and the way i like to see things , if you swop it would be the equivilent of paying off not 50 a month but closer to 80-85 to see the same results

it would be nice to shuffle some of the 15% loan onto an interest free for 15 months also , if you do this then move across only the money that will be paid off before the interest free period runs out as the card will have higher interest than 15% , if you could shuffle across say and extra 4 grand that would mean you paying off another £600 in a year

Think very carefully before doing this... I have 2 cats and a dog and all it takes is one accident!
Dog has amongst other things managed to catch a bug that had her in intensive care on a drip for several days - bill over £500... she's cut her pad on sticks in the field, she's had a growth under her tongue that she managed to catch and which wouldn't stop bleeding - cue emergency visit to vet to have her put under and the growth removed and quarterised to stop bleeding and tests to make sure it was benign... cue a £350 bill... One of my cats tried to take on a car... £1500 later....

yes its a gamble but an educated one , sounds to me you have been unlucky thats all , in all ive had 6 dogs and the total vet charges excluding jabs has come to £90 , not bad for owning dogs and cats for 25 yrs

£1500 quid on a cat ????? few ways of looking at this , some fool the other day spent 3 grand on vets bills for a rabbit , 3 thousand pounds , its beyond common sense , another way of looking at it is this , every day its survival of the fittest in the animal world , to get through the day without being eaten is a bonus , that day your cat was stupid enough to tangle with a car , in the natural pecking order of things it shouldnt survive , it may sound cruel but its an animal and as such does not have feeling of humans even if we push the idea into our own perceptions , it feels pain and doesnt understand or appreciate a long long period of recovery , it doesnt have the mental faculties to understand , in effect its cruel to perpetuate an injury on an animal , if the injury is slight then by all means patch it up and send it on its way but if not then remove its pain with as little trauma as possible , i adore animals but also appreciate they have a place and value , this lady is going broke and everything possible must be done to help her through a sticky period in her life as such removing an unnecessary burden on her that is the luxury of insurance can only be beneficial , if she had life insurance id also tell her to drop that , id love her to spend a few hundred quid on decent locks and an alarm for the house and drop the contents insurance , id love her to lose the sky dish and get out and about doing basic fitness plus popping into the libery , id love her to consider another aspect to her present work and thats to get her number around to every courier company within 30 miles offering to be on call to collect small parcels instantly , i just want to give her a chance to turn this all around , the scare stories arnt gunna help

i didnt want to say this but do check up on your local vet charities such as pdsa , if the worse comes to the worse then they fix up the pooch for a donation , sadly some people who can afford the bills abuse the good nature of these places but in your case it would be justified and hence i didnt mention this before

Hi Basher . Taxi has given you great advice, she is a trooper.
Re getting your food bills down, you could batch cook and make stews, chillies and curries in a slow cooker. Treat yourself to a wide mouthed flask and some yummy crusty bread and you have a meal you can take on the road.
Don't forget to put money aside for the Inland revenue. If you put it in an ISA then you will not pay tax on it and you will get interest.
Stick with us and you will be debt free sooner than you think.
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

Hi Basher ..just popping by to wish you a merry christmas and to catch up.Hope everything is ok and that you can relax and enjoy christmas.
I don't insure my dogs either...my old one is 14 1/2 and has only been neutered and had injections and those sort of things and is still going strong.
My new dog Tess (Rottie) is 18 months old but I've only had her a couple of months..I had her spayed last week and she had a skin condition when I got her...
I just face bills when they come in as I couldn't have claimed off insurance for any of those bills anyway...
For Izzeys info the PDSA is for people on benefits and claiming HB as well.
