  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions and memories. DH and I have created yet another snowman that has turned out quite well, I was going to attach a picture but I can't seem to work out how to do it!

Anyway thanks again and I hope you all have a great christmas.

When I was younger we had a snowman made out of cardboard that my mother filled with small presents (i.e pencils, rubber etc) which we opened during christmas tea. I have tried several times to make one for my children but they never seem to turn out the same.
I don't suppose anyone can remember the original idea I think it came from a womans magazine.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You made me cry:cry: but in a sad remembering way.

my husbands family have this little "heirloom" . A Cardboard snowman which is filled with sweets (quality sreet etc) and who is opened by the children on Christmas day.
He is lovely. He was made by DH grandpa (who died in about 1990) and "overhauled 3 or 4 yrs ago, using the left over cotton wool from her leg dressings (unused:rotfl:) by his grandma. Grandma died at easter. THis will be our first christmas without her. We will miss her soo much and I hope the snowman will be out to remind us of her.

    THanks.

My gran started this tradition in our family in 1940. She used to make something every year and then fill it with little presents for either Christmas Day or Boxing Day tea.

My mum has carried on. She has made crackers, candles, Hansel and Gretal cottages, snowmen, angels. One year she wrapped a huge cardboard box present with the hole in the side to get the pressies out.

We all looked forward to the 'cracker' more than Christmas presents because it was always so much fun taking turns to pull out a pressie and then seeing whose name was on it. One year my cousin didn't get any presents until near the end because his had been hidden at the bottom (He'd been a pain with everyone).

My mum in law had a different idea. She used to have presents in the middle of the table with strings attached to your plate. It wasn't as much fun as dipping into a cracker.
  • the mother-in-law was talking about these snowmen just yesterday - my kids thought it was a great idea for next year

  • when Blue Peter was mentioned I instantly remembered these! I remember my Dad starting making one of these with me (probably after much nagging from me). We never actually finished it but I remember painstakingly sticking the tissues on to the body. If anyone knows the actual steps to making this I'd be very grateful. Sounds now like a great tradition to make now for my kids!

  • ours was made from a sweet jar, tho not one of the big ones, I remember my mum using the sheets of cotton wool to wrap round the jar for the body, cant remember whta the head was made from, wasnt scrunched up paper, maybe a tennis ball????

She made a Xmas candle from a fluoruscent light tube too, pretty sure that was also a Blue Peter one . Tube placed upright in a plant pot filled with OASIS, red tinsel draped round it and she cut out a flame shape with really strong card and coloured it ....well flamelike.....

Forgot all bout that though, Thanx for those memories

  • I'd use cotton wool rather than scrunched up tissue if you want to get anything else done over Christmas! :D
