We had a snowman too, about 18" high and covered in cotton wool. His head was solid (well, certainly couldn't get into it/nothing in it) and he had a black velvet hat. The body was cardboard... he got quite battered over the years. I loved that old snowman.

It could be possible to make the body out of a large plastic drinks bottle (there are some super-wide ones, cider probably), cut the bottom off and find a way to make the edges not sharp (sand them down and put thick insulating tape on maybe? Then it needs some way of reattaching the base or creating a new one.

Could make the head out of a 50p plastic ball covered in cotton wool, with a hole cut which would fit on top of the bottle cap end.

  • I remember this. We had one. My mum used to fill it with a small gift for everyone and after tea we all got another little pressie.

We did this every year until one year my dad stored the decorations in the garage and not the loft. When mum took them in the house and opened it she had a lovely pressie of a mice nest and 2 mice running about the kitchen :)

Neadless to say dad was not too popular!!

  • No210618594_o.jpgt Not quite one that you can sit on your table, but seven years ago when our first son was one, I got the urge to make something special and memorable for Christmas for him and I came up with this. He works as an advent calendar and is made out of a large piece of spare wood painted all in some spare blue emulsion we had at the time. Then I copied a cute picture of a snowman from the internet and drew it freehand onto the board and then painted this with spare white emulsion we also had. I bought some PVA glue and stuck some cotton wool balls all over him. I also bought 2 sets of gift boxes from Ikea (12 in each) and screwed them onto the board. I donated a scarf, coloured in the numbers, his hat, eyes etc in permanent marker and a few bits of christmas decorations for his hat. Originally he had some angel hair type stuff that he was 'stood' on but that kept falling off. In fact he has only just had a new coat of cotton wool and we decided to stick a ton of glitter to the bottom instead of the angel hair. He is a seriously well loved part of Christmas for us and he brings a silver chocolate coin and a little bit of something else everyday, i.e. rubber, pencil sharpener etc. Tomorrow (Christmas Eve! Yay! :T ) he will be leaving nothing but a clue in his no. 24 box and the kids, and the big kid (OH) will have a treasure hunt to follow leading to a final present from Snowman. Last year it was 'The Snowman' on DVD, this year it is an animated Snowman teddy which plays Ice Ice Baby and moves his head round like the rappers do - it's gonna be hilarious and the kids are soooo gonna love it!

    So glad I did it!

Me too - I'm afraid I am going to have to 'steal' that idea for future Christmases - hope you don't mind!

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

    It was Blue Peter!

A large snowman that his head that can come off and the presents came out. Large cardboard body (just the 2 ends stuck together so it looks like a large loo roll holder) with scrunched up tissue paper stuck to him (this took AGES!!), a paper machie head with a loo roll holder for a neck - again with scrunched up tissue paper on it. Decorated with eggboxes cut out for the buttons and nose etc.

We also had a rudolph made from pipe cleaners and paper machie pulling a cardboard sleigh filled with sweets.

I remember all the kids in the neighbourhood helping mothers make these! We all compared results - fat rudolphs and bald snowmen spring to mind!
