Snowman with presents inside

Options
When I was younger we had a snowman made out of cardboard that my mother filled with small presents (i.e pencils, rubber etc) which we opened during christmas tea. I have tried several times to make one for my children but they never seem to turn out the same.
I don't suppose anyone can remember the original idea I think it came from a womans magazine.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi drummer, you've just bought back some lovely memories for me, thanks.
Unfortunately I was only little so I don't remember the mechanics of it, I just remember it had pressies in it.
Only thing I can think is maybe paper macheing 3 balloons, leaving top and bottoms of 2 of the ballons unmached(is that a word)? to leave a hollow centre and maybe taking a hat off to access the gifts.

Or maybe something like this http://www.gourmet-cookie-bouquets.com/snowman_tower_of_treats.html
You can buy any colour stacking boxes and should just be able to paint them with a couple of coats of white acrylic.
Not the same I know as I remember ours had some sort of white batting round it but it was the only things I could think of.
  • WOW! what a blast from the past, we had one also, can't remember the way it was made, all i remember is the red scarf and black hat, it used to come out year after year, thinking about it i,m sure my mum made it herself, how about some strong card covered in cotton wool for the body and head??

I remember them when I was little. We didn't have one but when we went to Grandads on Boxing day he always had one. Sometimes it was a chimney, sometimes a snowman.............oh sweet memories............:o

Not the same as the cardboard snowman, but this year, we had an early christmas day, yesterday for OH's kids as we are going to my family for xmas day the are (24, 21 sons, 14 yr old DD and 5 yr old GD and I made the girls presents up into snowmen, made a paper machie head, put card inside a white bin liner and then filled it up with their presents, got hat, scarf and glove set to decorate them. Had already made the boys pressies into xmas trees. All went down very well......am now just worried what I might have to think up for next year :rotfl:

My Gran & Aunt used to do all the grandchildren a santa each year, made from a large tube, and crepe paper etc with presents inside ... god knows where they got the tubes from as they were too large in diameter to be kitchen roll ones, it's been years since she last did one, I think they stopped when the grandchildren kept coming and ended up being over 30!!!!
