I locked myself out of my house
Just the other day I locked myself out of my house, A really stupid thing to do.
I did not have a spare key hidden under the flower pot or mat.
Can anybody suggest a solution, so I never have to spend £120 in locksmith charges again.
There must be a better way?

I leave a spare key with some good friends who only live a couple of miles away. Job done.

Hello HappyHelper
Welcome to the MSE site.
Giving a trusted neighbour or someone from your family or a friend a house key would be one option.
Or
If you have a good memory (and a garden) you could bury a spare house key in the garden.
Or
If you work, leave a spare house key in your desk. A return journey to work would be cheaper than calling out a locksmith.
Or
Hide a spare house key in your car, if you have a car.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the 'I wanna' and 'In my home' and Health & Beauty'' boards. If you need any help on these boards, do let me know. I'm not so sure leaving keys in the garden is a good idea
Insurance companies wont pay out if mr burglar had a key to get in with. I know its a chance in a million he'd find it  how unlucky are you ??
If you cant leave a spare with someone, check with your insurance company to see if they recommend you getting one of these.
key safe
This one looks like a padlock.
There are plenty of different ones to choose from. It all depends upon what your insurance company recommend.

Halifax general insurance also offers the following advice to homeowners:
Never have anything containing your name and address attached to your keys.
Never leave keys under doormats, on string through the letterbox, under a stone, on the top of a door/window frame etc. An opportunist thief may be watching!
Never leave doors or windows open when you go out. If you can get in, so can a burglar.
Always leave a spare set of keys with a trusted friend, neighbour or family member. Try to choose someone who lives close and spends a lot of time at home.
Try not to keep all your keys on one key ring separate the front door and back door keys.If only everything in life was as reliable...AS ME !!

Hmmm
i locked myself out my new house a few years ago, I had left an upstairs window open. Anyway I tried to knock on the neighbours doors to ask for a set of ladders. In hindsight it saved me loads of money but a neighbour I had never met or knew said sure just borrow mine.
Maybe it was because I was not wearing my mask and stripey jumper carryin a swag bag but I have since put in an alarm and self locking window locks so Its going to be well expnesive for me to get in now.
However if someone asks me for ladders I'll ask for proof of who they are so you best carry ID. lol:j0 -

I purchased a Shurlok from https://www.hidakey.co.uk at the end of last week.(7/11/2005) It arrived today and I have to be honest it is really solid and secure. In addition I purchased a wall mounting bracket.
I think it is important to add that the box will be mounted in an obscure hiding place. I won't be using it every day!

I agree about not leaving a key in the garden. I've only got a small garden and I dont think a burgular would take long to find anything I'd hid.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040

Last time I locked myself out, I realised I'd left the kitchen window open, and my youngest son was small enough to fit through it :rotfl:Here I go again on my own....0
