  • Hi, no it 'hangs' just before it finishes installing the files (stops and then nothing happens).

However using superantispyware alternate start I managed to run and update superantispyware and am doing a full scan now.

I've recently installed Kaspersky Internet Security on all our PC's which gives complete protection against virus, spyware, malware and lot's more, plus has a firewall and parental control built in. It's a lot better than AVG!

If you're a Barclays customer you can get a 12mth licence to run 3 PC's FREE of charge ;)

can you not run MALWAREBYTES etc in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING now?

OK, after running SAS and rebooting, I was able to run malwarebytes, then also did the Panda online scan and then turned off system restore and was able to run Malwarebytes again in safe mode, then ran SAS again in safe mode, rebooted in normal mode and turned system restore back on.

Laptop (touch wood) seems to be working okay as I can search Google for Kaspersky, malwarebytes etc etc and go to the correct site and a new window for fake anti spyware does not open.

So thanks to everyone for the help - much obliged.

Only 1 thing laptop seems quite slow but maybe that is all the new software loading in startup and running in background??

    Thanks again! :xmassign:

  • I'd initially go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything you don't need.

Next you can turn off the software from starting up at boot e.g. for SAS go to Preferneces -> Untick the Start-Up Options e.g. when Windows starts, system tray icon and splash screen.

For the rest double click each icon in your system tray and look for similar options. Have a look what's set to load in the Startup folder by going to Start -> All Programs -> Startup. Delete things here that you don't want to load on startup.

Finally investigate msconfig. This site gives a really good overview of what it is and how to use it.

Finally run CCleaner and do a defrag,

If your absolutely sure its fine, you can uninstall threatfire (or maybe just disable the resident protection?)
But you MUST use an anti virus (Avira is regarded as the quickest), and id really recommend keeping PCTOOLS FIREWALL (Also regarded as the fastest firewall), as youve been infected and for all we know it might just be lying in wait.
Super anti Spyware can be disabled, and just use as a SCANNER when need be.
    Are there any others?

I think id also recommend a Kaspersky online scan (just as a double check)
Try an online scan here at Kaspersky
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
    • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
    • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Ive also thought certain nasties have gone. Only for them to reappear a few days/weeks later!

  • If it were me I'd back everything up to DVD / external HDD and use recovery disks / Windows XP / Vista disks to do a re-install. But that's just me :)
