Laptop infected with Malware and is completely unusable :(

My laptop started acting up recently and a pop up to install some program called VirusRemover2008 popped up yesterday.

AVG found these:
Trojan Horse Downloader.Generic8.GWR
Trojan Horse SHeur 2.GAS
winloggn.exe

This happened yesterday despite my AVG being up to date and I regularly use Advanced Systemcare.

The laptop is now impossible to use - all the icons flash and disappear then reappear every 5 seconds, sometimes I can run Advanced Systemcare to do a spyware scan but about two thirds through the scan it just freezes. I cannot update AVG or do a scan. I downloaded Malwarebytes onto a flash drive but I cannot run it as it won't let me and by the time I go to my computer, drive f, click on malwarebytes it does the 'resetting' thing and I have to start all over again. Have tried this over and over in safe mode and normal but it just won't run.

I also tried restore but that didn't work either.
Any ideas of getting rid of this Malware which has killed my laptop.

  • Can you start off by booting again into safe mode then running

    1. CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com
    2. Run an anti-virus scan: http://www.free-av.com/
    3. Run an anti-spyware scan: http://www.superantispyware.com/
4, Run an anti-malware scan and post a log back here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
    5. Run HijackThis and post a log back here: http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis
  • Will try but it only gives me about 5 seconds then it resets itself...

    Even in safe mode?

  • Yes, I get a pop-up which has a Yes and a No option - yes is to continue using safe mode, no is to do a system restore. I assume this is the Malware popping up a fake message?

  • No, it's impossible to run anything - downloaded everything from this list and installed to flash drive but an't even get any of them to run and after about 5 or 6 attempts to go to my computer, F drive then a program the laptop just freezes.

If your lappy is not even letting you run apps stable even in safe mode, sounds like your only option is to wipe it (Last resort) or get the hard drive out (Not too difficult on a lappy and cheaper than taking the entire unit) and take it to someone else' machine (friend should be free, shop will cost) to add and get them to run some decent, up to date AV/malware/spyware apps. I've not yet found one single application that finds everything so running different ones is what I do.

Must say though, AVG is 'ok', but there are other freebies you could grab to add to your arsenal.

It isn't. It's not even close to being as this and several dozen other threads have indicated. You'll note they're all AVG users.
  • crash and burn the copy of windows and start again , sadly you will lose everything on the hard drive but its possible to recover most if you can find the right program , once you have a new patch on it go buy yourself an external hard drive and stick everything of importance on it as a back-up , you will never lose the important stuff again this way , its worth scrubbing the lot from time to time to remove all the hostile stuff
  • I'd investigate Knoppix (Live Linux Filesystem On CD) or BartPE (bootable Windows CD-Rom) to get your data back then wipe the disk and start over.

Using another PC/Laptop, create a Rescue Disc using the Avira Rescue System and Boot Up with it.

Hopefully you'll remove the virus that way.

    Guide here.
