I don't quite follow this scam:
1. 0800 number (UK number) ) on a 1-800 VISA (USA) card?
2. Do US credit cards have a seven digit number on the back?
2. How did they get your name, card number, card expiry date, address, phone number and maybe your date of birth but not the three-digit security code?
If such a fraud does exist (which I doubt) then there are a few things that the fraudster has said on the phone to the card holder that would make me suspicious:
1. Credit card companies don't know what you buy with your credit card!
2. If they give you a reference number for the supposed fraud then that is, presumably, for the credit card company and not the card issuer. But he then tells you to quote that number when ringing the phone number on the reverse of your card. Only the card issuer's phone number apppears on the back of the credit card - not that of the credit card company!
3. I would have thought that fraud reference numbers are longer than six digits!
4. And why did he issue the fraud reference number before ensuring you were in possession of the credit card and that you are the cardholder?
5. Why did he not ask security questions to determine the indentity of who he was calling?
6. Why did he not quote the card number to the person he was calling? (they may have more than one card!)
7. No credit card company would offer an immediate refund based on one phone call to the card holder and before asking the card holder any questions!0 -
At least the banks in this country return your money if its being charged by these crooks0

Varjak,
if you have a Barclaycard the number on the back is for the card issuer and the company as Barclays issue their own cards. Youll get through to lost and stolen if you call the number. They CAN see what you have been buying (how do you think they send statements?)
The reason some data is accessible and some not is because certain data is on the magnetic strip which can be skimmed for details.
Its not that hard to get basic details on people. The three digit number is a security measure as it does not appear on the mag strip- someone may copy your card but they wont have the three digit no. just as they wont have your pin!
So, fraudsters will call to get the physical details off the card. As far as some transactions go, the retailer will accept any date as long as it means the card in "in date". Since chips were introduced some of this has changed of course as cards are harder to reproduce but the point remains. Some data you can get off the card, some you cant. Some you have to call people for. THIS IS A GENUINE SCAM.
JaimeErr, I'll get back to you about the funny signature0
