Credit Card Scam

I had a telephone call yesterday from a credit card checking agency claiming to check my details on behalf of Tescos, they started to ask for details but I declined. The operator then gave me a number to call back 08701 541456. I rang back and they just answered the phone with "credit card checking", I asked if that was on behalf of Tescos and she explained they work for many companies, I said thank you, goodbye and put the phone down.
It's sad that in this day and age we have to be so wary of who we trust, but you can't be too careful. It just shows how easy it is to divulge your personal details to someone.

I have a Halifax card and was called by them a while ago to check my details. This was a genuine call but the caller asked me to confirm information regarding myself and my card to verify that I was the person that they had called, I refused on the basis that he could be anyone and he got a bit stroppy until I spoke with his superior and outlined my concerns. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I would have refused on the grounds that it's a rip-off 0870 number, and told them so. Say no to 0870!
Anyway - I never get these scam calls because I don't give out my home telephone number. Simple.0 -
It is a little disappointing that the text for this looks as if it has come straight of the Snopes urban legend page, dated December 2003 - except that $ has been replaced with £

How may many UK numbers do you know that begin with 1?This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Yup bit silly really (scam copied from snopes.com) - I though the phone number was a bit odd and so was checking to see what others had said. No wonder these people make a good living out of scams. Seems people will beleive anything. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

::) If any bank calls me and asks me to confirm by date of birth and other security questions, I tell them to give me 3 dates of birth and I will tell them the right one and also if they ask for my mothers maiden name, again I ask them to tell me three names and I will inform them of the correct one from a choice of 3 !!

I ALSO HAD A CALL FROM ABBY NATIONAL, I SAID "HOW DO I KNOW WHO YOU ARE?" THEY SAID "I HAVE YOUR DETAILS IN FRONT OF ME."I SAID," ALRIGHT THEN," WHAT`S MY DATE OF BIRTH? THEY ANSERED ANGERLY, "I ASK THE QUESTIONS." I WILL NOT REPEAT MY ANSER.
IT`S THE BANK WHO ARE TO BLAIM. TSB KEEP ON SENDING ME BLANK CRIDIT CARD CHECKS IN A JUNK MAIL ENVOLPE, THE ONE`S I NORMALLY BIN WITHOUT OPENING.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Andrew (Stutt) What a terrific idea! I'll be adopting this idea from now on and suggesting my bank do the same!
Meanwhile, m l - don't bin anything with your name and address on it, even junk mail, particularly credit card applications with your name and address already printed on them. Buy a shredder (preferably cross-cut: in PC World at the moment for £20 - very good price) and put anything paper through it before throwing them out.
Veering slightly off-topic: to avoid further junk mail - either register with the mailing preference service, or just send back everything in the reply paid envelope! Once companies are paying to post something twice and realise you're not interested, they soon stop wasting their money.0 -
Aha, well spotted. So Martin has been scammed by the scam. He should have some strong words with the MoneySaver member who passed it on to him as though it happened to them personally.
Sure, it's possible, but it's quite an intricate scam, not something that would happen on a large scale. It's not easy to get someone's CC number and telephone number. Easier to cold call and try to get the credit card number as well.
A real scam that's happening (it happened to me again yesterday) is the fake emails from banks directing you to websites where you're asked to fill in your ATM number. Luckily the emails themselves are ludicrously worded ("we have informations your account is lost in database crash") but the websites are very, very believable. As a first test, check if there's a padlock in the bottom right corner.

Hmmm I smile with interest. The strange thing is i have been emailed a number of times by people saying this or something similar has happened to them. I have even entered correspondence with them
I wonder whether if it's an elaborate joke or some unscrupulous thugs have taken advantage of the scam they've read.
Either way - the warning stands. Never give details to someone calling you claiming to be from a card company. IT's a simple rule and people get stung.
