Anti Virus, etc

I got my laptop around 4 months ago now, and had a Norton trial already installed so I was using that. A good few months ago the trial ended (and I'm still trying to get rid of Norton, it seems impossible to delete), I haven't had any form of virus scanner, etc since then and think it's about time I got it sorted out.

I know there are some good free ones that people use, what are they? Is it just one virus checker that I need or are there other things? Any ideas how to get rid of Norton? ;)

Thanks for any help :T

You need to use one of the Norton Removal Tools.
Once removed there are free antivirus products you can use.
    Avast!
    AVG
    AntiVir
    just to mention a couple

Use Avira AntiVir, or Avast if you need email scanning.

Also, install Malwarebytes's Anti-malware and SuperAntiSpyware (go into its options and disable it running at startup).
  • Avira antivirus is highly recommended by the geeks and I have used it for the last 18 months and found it fine. It also does not slow up my machine as much as Norton or mcfee. Comodo also do a good free antivirus as well as a first rate free firewall

I've never replaced AVG with Avira AntiVir on a computer and not had it find things AVG missed.

Before uninstalling AVG yesterday did my usual weekly scan ....
    clean as a whistle!

Downloaded AAV ...scanned the downloaded file with AVG and Malwarebytes (clean) uninstalled AVG...
installed AAV then setup a system scan while i watched a movie....
then it found the three nasties!

    So......??
