Prescribed diet pills from doctor

I have an underactive thyroid and have been taking Orlistat/Xenical for about 6 weeks
I lost 6kg in the first 4 weeks, and I know I've definitely lost more over the last couple of weeks as my jeans are falling off.
The only side effect I've had has been wind (of the rear end variety!!) but I've been eating very low fat.
I think the reason it's working for me is as much to do with being scared of having the side effects, so I really am sticking to low far, as the action of the drug itself0 -

The one I referred to earlier, in conjunction with an exercise regime, works.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -

Thats my way of thinking, the thought of side effects is certainly a reason not to eat something with excess fat.
How bad is the wind though, are you ok out in public?
What is your average day eating wise?0 -
There are two that doctors normally prescribe, orlistat (aka xenical) which reduces the fat that is sbsorbed by your stomach and gets rid of approx 30% of it through your bowels. The other is Reductil which is an appetite supressant.
I have tried orlistat - see my experience in my post in the other thread thats near the top of this board and it wasnt great.
I am starting w8 at the beginning of January. It is very similar to Cambridge/ Lighter life except that it is done online and they post the packs out to you.
The whole idea of diets like this is that you restrict the amount of carbs you eat while still eating protein and some fats. This makes your body go into a process called ketosis where instead of getting its energy from the carbs you eat it gets it from your fat stores. It is similar to atkins, except the mealpacks are a replacement to most of your normal food. Have a google, it might be worth looking into.
Also, the forum at minimins is great for all different diets/pills/surgeries. xx0 -

Thanks for the info and had a look but really dont want to go on a liquid diet as feel would just put the weight back on when I came of it. The atkins diet is not really suitable for a vegetarian diet either as tried that and is really hard to do if you dont eat any meat at all. Thanks for you help though
PS. Good luck to you on your diet.0 -
Ive tried both reductic and xenical and found the reductil didnt help and gave me restless sleep so went back to the xenical which as others have said can be messy and windy but if you change your diet this lessens the side affects. Ive been on it for 9 months now and have lost 35 lb i started of being classed as obese and im now down to the top of the range of my ideal weight and i now look at what im eating and find an alternative. I now have savoury rice instead of chips and dont have a lot of white/creamy/cheesy sauses, If having a fry up its dried fried and my eggs i use a tiny bit of olive oil with a lid on the fry pan so i still enjoy a dippy yolk, low fat flora as you dont really taste the butter on a sandwich and if you do your using too much
I still eat out/takeaway but instead of the usuall chicken fried rice i will have king prawn/chicken and pineapple and a tiny drop of rice as i used to eat 75% of the dish with rice now i eat 100% of the meal with only 5% rice, i can even have the odd curry but i think the rice is the culprit. Drink wise i try to stick to spirits with diet juice as i love baileys but it just stick pounds back on me so i have a bottle for xmas as i aint going to get there without some sacrafices
Too many people dont like xenical because of the side affects as they expect to loose weight without changing thier diet but all that does is give them yukky toilets and wind but i found it helped me to stick to the low fat diet as the reductil had no side affects if i tucked into chicken fried rice. Also my doctor advised me not to eat after 7pm as your body cant/doesnt work it off so basically go to bed hungry and your system gets used to it which it does;)The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Glad to hear you can eat normal food on it, that way more likely to work. Well done on what you have achieved. Im in the obese range now so you have just showed me it is possible!
How bad are the side effects?0 -
I get gurgly tummys at night but you get used to that, i now go to the toilet at least once a day which it used to be every second - fourth day so thats a bonus for me. The bad bits are if i have eaten a lot of fat then i break wind over the toilet just incase but thats no biggy as i walk out the room anyway
you will learn when its safe and when to go to the loo. When you toilet it is handy as someone else has mentioned to keep flash spray bleach as the oil is orange and can linger if not cleaned but 2 mins sorts that.
PS The side affects cant be that bad or i wouldnt have stayed on them for 9 months, I was so determinded to loose the weight it didnt bother me. Good luck and i hope they work for you.The more i save the more i can spend:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Thanks you've set my mind at rest as I thought it would be a nightmare.
Your gonna be my inspiration to do this!
Merry xmas0 -

your experience is great for me to hear too.
Diet wise, I'm just eating "sensibly" as I've used skimmed milk and done all the "obvious" stuff for years, and as a family we do have a pretty healthy diet. I've just had to cut out the HUGE amount of cr*p I was eating between meals
I'm tending to have all bran/skimmed milk or banana on 2 slices of toast for breakfast, home made veg soup for lunch and generally whatever the family are having in the evening, but in smaller portions.
Wind-wise, it seems to be worse for me in the mornings, but so far (not counting any chickens!) I've not had any "follow through" (sorry if tmi:o )0
