virgin does it - but i think they stipulate that in order to keep the number active that you have to top up or use the number at least once in every 6 months

plus they dont charge for voicemail like some of the other do
  • Orange do it, I've just changed mine from a contract to pay-as-you-go, kept the same number too.

i can't find an o2 tarriff that allows me to do the above...
  • 1 chargeable call at least once every 6 months and one top up every 2 1/2 years is the minimum
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)

looks like t-mobile and vodafone don't need regular top-ups. O2 seems to be the only main one that specifies monthly funding required!

Pretty much all my family are on o2 payg, never had any problems with them not topping up monthly.

No network requires monthly top ups

As far as I know, O2 still offer payg with the usual only proviso of making one call every six months. The £10-14, £15, top-ups every month thingummijigs are just optional extras that you can receive if you do want to pay £10 every month.

As Redux has already pointed no network requires regular monthly top ups.Their is however normally a requirement that you make a call, send a text every 6 months to keep your sim live, some networks enforce this quicker then others.

The only reason they require you top up more often is if you wish to avail yourself of a particular offer eg Free Texts.

Best low user tariff is probaly Asda. http://www.asda-mobile.com/?node_id=1.2
They will suspend service if you choose not to use
the Services for a continuous period of 180 days (‘use the Services’ means (i) making
any chargeable outbound calls (excluding calls to 2732, see Price Plan for prices), or
(ii) any topping up of your account)
