Can we get this thread going again? I'm interested in saving money when doing Slimming World. I'm finding fresh fruit, veg and meat are expensive. Any tips would be appreciated!

  • Ooops - thank you for getting this thread going again.

I am on SW too, and want to keep to a budget for food.

I dislike pasta, which cuts out a cheap source of carbs, and try to avoid bread as I can eat half a loaf without realising. I can't have cheese in the house as I will eat it all in one go!

I have porridge for breakfast most days, with a few slices of fruit added when it's cooked. I often have HM soup for lunch and keep a carrot in the fridge for snacks with a hard-boiled egg ready for late night munchies (good advice from my group members).

I struggle with my main meal - I usually have some kind of meat or fish (often a SW recipe), potatoes or rice, vegetables and salad. I would like to try something different but an reluctant to break my budget.

    Can anyone suggest anything?
  • A lot of the Jack Monroe budget recipe's are SW friendly. You may need to tweak them slightly (using fry-lite instead of oil for example) but they are cheap and usually packed with free / superfree food. I especially love the carrot kidney bean and cumin burgers.

The same philosophy goes for any other budget recipe; you can tweak them to make them SW friendly.

I do love an oven baked risotto; basics rice (40p for a massive bag), frozen mixed peppers, some mushrooms, frozen spinach and veg stock. "Roast" the veg for 15 minutes, throw in the rice and stock and spinach and leave in the oven for 20-30 minutes. Can get at least 2 portions out of it so enough to take to work the next day. I usually stir through some soft cheese or low low depending on whats on offer but it's good without it also.

A bag of basics frozen mixed veg can be used for anything and everything; curries, side dishes, with rice and some sweet chilli sauce etc. and it's a good way of getting your suprefree in.

oops - for fruit and veg try Aldi as they often have super 6 offers on and fruit and veg for around 59p. Also if you have a local market go there for fruit and veg towards the end of the day.

I tend to buy my meat from the whoopsie shelf in the supermarkets, portion it and freeze it on the same day and eat when I feel like it.

For those wanting to change - why not see if you can find a slimming world book in a charity shop or borrow one from the library? I found a 30 minute meal SW book in a charity shop for £1.

Must admit that I use the Hairy Dieters recipes which are filling although not SW even though I go to SW.
