Very worrying times at the Port for everyone, job losses of 60 or more on the Norfolk line ro/ro service due to as you say reduced volumes but one less sailing but with bigger vessels, but Norfolk line wanting to use their own crew for lashing bringing about the job losses. As Pickles has said Union & management are negotiating as to swallow up the losses but with the container division already carrying surplus labour due to reduced volumes it does not look good.

    Fewk me:eek:
You gonna be alright Jetski mate?

  • In my 28 yrs on the dock, I can't ever remember compulsory redundancies amongst the hourly paid - let's hope it can be avoided this time.

I think the ideas being bounded about are not to have redundancies as it's too costly and once this is over they will need everyone still in place and possibly more, I think they are looking at ways similar to the Swindon car plant and have everybody on reduced hours and pay for a certain length of time.

A head honcho from Manchester Airport was on the radio this afternoon, he made the following two points:
Over 50% of Britain's import/export of goods by value now travel by air.(?!?)
    Airfreight is down 30%

Goods by value, I have no evidence to dispute that, but by volume, I would suspect it's not more than 2%.

Just to slightly expand on this, if there are to be redunancies, the only affected area is the RO/RO and not the container division.
Of course you are correct that once the expansion is complete and the world pulls it self out the depressing mire, several staff will need to be taken on to work the new terminal.

I don't understand how goods by any sort of measure can be down only 2% when recession is starting to bite, retailers are closing, and factories are having enforced holidays. The only thing I can think we might still be importing is Pot Noodles.

I thought there were definately not going to be any redundancies?
