Dock Basin R.I.P
Fungus, the dock basin, as it was known, is where Felixstowe Docks began.
It was where general cargo vessels berthed, it use to be 'wall to wall' ships
from all over the world. The Felixstowe dockers built a reputation as hard-workers and more importantly were a non militant workforce - outside the Docks labour scheme. With the advent of containerisation, the need for general cargo berths deminished and 'the basin' became a relic of past history
As for being ominous for the workers of Felixstowe, to the contary. The basin
has been filled in as part of the process of building a continuous container quay -
work which is continuing as we speak. Felixstowe will be well placed for any
recovery in the shipping industry.0 -

Yeah, thanks. So is the dock closing or what?0 -
No Mate and the planned expansion is gathering pace and the new deep water berth at Landguard should be open in 2010.
This will put the Port ahead of its competitors and in a very strong place when the country comes out of recession.0
