Have you tried going to the windows update site in SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING?

Im running out of ideas personally but please could you post an upto date Hijack log to see how it looks now?

  • Just as a random suggestion to throw in here (just passing through, was looking for info on processors when this page popped up).

Have you tried downloading and installing the updates manually? I have seen it in the past where one of the updates for Office for some reason asks for the installation source (ie. The CD) for files before it will install. Haven't worked out why, but it does.

What you could try is going to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E25B7049-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en and downloading the SP manually and then running the install. That will then either install, or should provide you with a more useful error message that you can go off rather then just the update failed to install.

(Hope no one else minds me just jumping in :))
  • ive tried the link cache gave, thanks, but it wouldnt let me install sp3 it said there was a missing file SKU011.cab

ive tried to go to microsofts website and install the updates manually from there, but no luck.

its every time i open up excel i get a window popup saying configuring office 2003 setup, then it asks me for the original disk, but i dont have it, so ive been clicking on cancel and it gets rid of it, but its annoying becasue i cant open up excel attachements that are sent to me, i have to save them down then open when im in excel
its only a bargain, if you need it or will use it.

That will be the reason that Windows Update is failing then. Because all those updates are Office 2003 updates, basically it automates the process you carried out by downloading that update from the link and trying to install it. Until you can get a hold of the original disc, those updates won't install.

I think your problems can only be resolved by uninstalling Microsoft Office or by reinstalling it from the CD.
Open Office is a good free alternative for Word and Excel and will read Microsoft files.
