Motorway "Rip-off" stations...

  • I didn't say that Mc's was cheaper, only that it charges the same prices as the High Street branches.

The other brands (especially Burger King) DO charge a lot more and should be avoided.

And don't even get me started on Little Chefs!!!

  • Thanks for the tip about the RAC, I've been a member for years and never realised that I could be saving 20% with it.

    > RAC members get 20% discount at MOTO servoces,
    > across the board in restaurant

Last time I visited a Moto I just wanted a quick cup of coffee but was told that the 20% discount did not apply and was only for purchases over £2.00

on the subject of McDonalds and Burger King, they are actually all franchises so although the majority of them keep prices constant, they are within their rights to charge what they want for their goods......although you're very unfortunate if you find one that does charge much more

i didnt know about the RAC reduction either...so is that true, its for purchases of £2 and upwards only?

personally i take a flask of decent coffee (better than the stuff they serve), some water and some food and eat it in the car park and just use the service station for the loo, cashpoint or whatever. if i haven't been bothered i go for roadchef cos they do costa coffee which i like.

If you are in the armed forces and show your ID card at a MOTO service station you will receive the 20% discount if you spend £2 or over.Though just joining up to get this discount might be a bit extreme.

  • Hi all,

    MOTO
One, four letter, word chosen to describe their company.

    CRAP
One, four letter, word they could have used instead

Could use plenty more but there might be kids reading

As a truck driver i must say that most motorway services are poor all round. When you have to stop overnight the showers and the food are very low standard. I have been lucky to have used the "5 minutes away" site via my WAP phone for the last 3 years and been very pleased with the information available.
If i could praise one service station it would be Hopwood Park at junction 2 on the M42. It is very clean, the staff are the friendliest i have come across and your food always reaches you in good time. They never quibble if you have a problem and any problem is quickly rectified. (I once had a stale bread roll).

  • Hi all,

I stand (or sit) by my previous comments, ;D

Use the facilities and don't spend any money

    In true money saving fashion.

  • Most service stations I've been to are ok just damned expensive. The Westmoreland services either side of the M6 at Tebay, Cumbria are not necessarily any cheaper but they are a lot nicer with a farmshop on the south bound side. I believe that they are the only privately owned stations in the country. Annandale Water is a Welcome Break station off the M74 north of Lockerbie and has really nice views and outside seating (still not any cheaper though!)

Truck stops rule though! The A5 stop (now renamed "Holly Farm" or similar) 1-2 miles east bound off M6 J12 and Stibbington Services off the A1 around Peterborough are both excellent. Basic but brilliant. good value grub. :D
