I assume you mean because they get hit by idiots driving too fast and smashing into them?!

I was doing 70mph yesterday in the fast lane of the M4, and some tw*t, clearly going well over the speed limit, almost smashed into me! Since I was driving so "slowly" he got aggressive and started flashing his lights and beeping his horn at me, before veering sharply (no indication) into the centre lane and blasting past me, still beeping his horn!

I think you'll find that most accidents are caused by people driving too fast and losing control of their cars... or driving whilst drunk, and/or using a mobile phone.

no such thing as a fast lane.
your the tw*t for sitting in the outside lane thinking "im doing the speed limit so nobody should pass me".
you should have moved into the left when you had completed your overtaking manouvre 5 miles ago.

If he was able to 'blast past you' then the centre lane must have been clear so why weren't you in that lane?

You highlighted in bold the salient point of his post and then still missed the point?

He said "biggest cause of accidents"; and he's right. Note the emphasis is on the word "cause".

There is no place on Britain's crowded roads in 2008 for idiots who potter along at 40mph on a 70mph motorway.

I'm completely in favour of a yearly driving test, fail and you can't reapply for five years, let's get the clowns out of the way and let the rest of us get on with our lives.

    Jesus! Talk about vitriol!

There were cars in the centre lane which I was overtaking, hence accelerating to 70mph to get past them. I was always told by my driving instructor to wait until you could clearly see the lights of the car you were overtaking in your rear-view mirror BEFORE indicating and pulling back in, which is what I was doing. I had passed the car I was overtaking but did not yet have that view. The tw*t who sped up behind me beeping and flashing cut sharply in front of the car in the centre lane and then veered back in front of me.

But thank you goldspanners for misinterpreting the post and assuming I was simply cruising in the fast lane. Being in Scotland I assume you have no concept of the M4, primarily a 3 lane motorway but frequently changing to 2 lanes, with the left lane becoming a designated turn off. The centre lane then fills up with slow moving traffic, hence my reference to the other lane being the "fast lane"...

And yet there is a place for idiots who tear around at 80mph+ on a daily basis?

But given the highlighted bit below, I can only assume you're one of them – impatient !!!!!! who think no one else should be on the roads besides them...

Which do you truly believe is the more dangerous:

    (a) someone driving at 90mph on a deserted motorway at 3 a.m on a Sunday morning or
    (b) someone driving at 35mph past a school entrance at 3.30p.m on a Monday afternoon?

Speed doesn't kill; inappropriate speed does.

thats right,we still dont have motorways in scotland and we arent allowed to leave the country to drive on anyone elses.

why wait til you can see them in the rear view mirror? if you are overtaking them you must be going faster than them so when you can see them in you nearside mirror you should be starting to move in to the left.
when you can see them in your rear view mirror you could fit a lorry into that gap.
ive been the guy who under took you so many times,2 wrongs dont make a right, but at least i get on with my day rather than fan*ying around in the wrong lane annoying others.

    Now you're changing things!

I was driving along the M4 at rush hour, so given the fog, the huge amount of traffic and the current road works, doing 90mph is NOT appropriate.

Being a driver who sticks to the speed limit regardless, I would not drive past a school at 35mph. But could the same be said of the people who see nothing wrong with driving 20mph over the speed limit on the motorway?!

I don't think doing 70mph on the motorway would be considered "fan*ying around in the wrong lane". Something tells me the law would not see it your way either...
