I've not experienced how the grant works, but if it is pure cash, how about getting the stuff on ebay? I had to replace my TV this week and won an auction today for a 28inch fully working silver bog standard TV for £2.31 today from someone who lives nearby. Freezers etc go for very little as they are only available locally for collection.

I think that ebay is an excellent option. We have just bought a gas fire for 98p!

I dont know what was said about him/me on this thread but I can imagine. This is someone who has been in care since he was 12. He is at college doing music so I fear there will be no job for him, although I think he would like to do a degree. He has applied for part-time jobs but he looks so scruffy, his hair needs cutting. He does not look well. He is also a bit proud about taking things. I once bought him a few bags of shopping and although grateful, I could tell he was embarrassed. He does not like asking for help. I told him I would take him to look at furniture but he went off by himself. He is a very nice person, but I think he has his pride. He is grateful for the help today and I can help him up to a certain point. I will certainly remind him about the tv licence but he is pretty mature and knows the importance of paying his rent first. I have told him to get a copy of his front door key cut so that we can keep them for him as he is always losing his keys. I will do my best.

I would also suggest getting a "moneysavingexpert" folder together for him & printing bits & pieces off.

You might want to refer him to pigsback ( tell him he wont be the only person using it ;) ) so he can get M&S vouchers towards his food. Also if he does need to buy anything ( even PAYG credit) he can log these on consumerpulse.co.uk which is v generous with vouchers IMO and even if he pays 50p for a t shirt - they will stil give him points and they rack up into ever-so useful vouchers.

theres some good articles on here and on the internet, and it might be a good idea to print som off as a "handbook" - I certianly wish Id have been given one of these when I set up my first home!

And dont forget- NEW HOME CARD- bet he wont get too many of these, and those I know of ( homeless families & the like) really appreciated them :)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

  • if he looks scruffy and is on a music course tell him to apply for jobs in the local guitar/music shop, record shop, HMV - he sounds just like their emplyees - and I a not being facetious here at all - its just that he has the right skills and being scruffy seems to be a positive in these workplaces (I have friends who have worked there!)
  • Hi there,
Is a 2 seater sofa any use to you? I have been looking to get rid of one for a while now and didnt want to bin it as it has some use left in it. Have tried freecycle but had a couple of no-shows on collection. Its navy blue, a little tatty but not too bad, has the seat cusions but no back cusions (a few scatter cusions on it would do the job though). We are in Wilmington so not too far from Swanley, post on here or send me a message if you are interested?

  • I'm sorry about my last post
After reading this thread properly i have realised how nice you people really are
Especially Tesuhoha, you are a star no doubt about it

Could you please give us an update on his current situation?
As many people on this thread have offered help but i am wondering if you have done anything about it..
The amount of things been offered on this thread is unreal and with most of the stuff offered here. He could possibly furnish most of his flat

Have you actually confronted the boy about the furniture been offered i know he is proud but im sure if you told him about the amount of furniture been offered he couldnt help but be thankful. .

Get back to us as soon as possible Thank you x
