I was also going to suggest Freecycle - its an easy, local supply of free stuff which is ideal for this lad's situation. The point about posting wanteds before making offers is valid but in my experience Freecycle tends to be very poorly moderated, I realldon;t think it is checked often.
One other thing that might be worth checking with is local church organistions - the Salvation Army is an obvious starting point but a lot of churches do work for the less privileged members of society.0 -

He can get cheap furniture here at the store listed here http://www.frn.org.uk/
I would suggest for www.freecycle.org, he would really benefit from help picking you stuff up. if you can't get hold of the mod, then maybe let him have an item to put up, then he can start to bid for stuff. It is varaible, but he can get electrical goods, furniture, white good, kitchen gear, bedding etc.
If he gets his basics from these sources, he will be able to afford some nice extras. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
The poor lad! Whereabouts in the country are you? Perhaps there are some of us who have some things we could help him out with if he's local?0

has he managed to get anything today?
hope he gets some bits. could try charity shops for some kitchen bits, if not relativly cheap then the sainsburys baking tins are very good value for money and extremly good quality. think a quid for a baking tray. george forman type thing and a microwave would probably see most of his cooking needs. think asda have their own brand or similar for silly amounts of money.Debt free 3 years early :j

But you will only need to pick up anything you're lucky enough to be offered from the address of the donor.

Good wishes to this young man and congratulations to you, custardy. I've admired many of your posts.
Charity shops and a wintry carboot or two this weekend would make a good start.
PLEASE HELP HIM UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF BUDGETING, THE UNIMPORTANCE OF 'THINGS'.

Firstly, it is heart warming to hear about someone actually doing something to help in a hands on way. Freecycle has alsorts including clothing, food near a sellby date, furniture, old TVs, etc/ You have to get in superquick for the more desiravle items, but you will be surprised what is on offer. Transport to collect would help. Ebay for super cheap furniure is also good, again, if you can collect items you will pick up bargains in beds, etc (ours was a fiver - with mattress!) The Salvation Army will often take a youngster in distress shopping and help them stock up on groceries - I have a friend who is SA I am astonished at the ganuine hands on help they provide.
Finally - give your young friend some basic cookery lessons and a bit of money management advice - so often youngsters blow any cash help with little to show for it. Invite him over from Christmas? We are taking in a waif and stray friend of my daughter`s. No family, horrible flat, alone at Christmas - what else could we do? I`m hoping it is the right thing, to quote Spike Lee. God bless you for your involvement.Debt September 2020 BIG FAT ZERO!
