The above comment filled me with dread, like going back <cough> many years to school, and being caught out yet again by the teacher. No, I really don't want to stand in front of the whole class of MSEers and try to bluff my way through it.

Ah school. Happy days. Not. Can you believe I spent most of my time messing about, talking rubbish, crap jokes and not really paying attention.

Ah yes, but from what I've seen on here, you have character and that can't be taught.;)

Genius. So if something is growing faster than something else, it will eventually dwarf the other, however much of a headstart the slower growing one has.

Unless you happen to be one of Zeno's tortoises, of course :rotfl:

Edit: the point of Zeno's paradox, and the spanner in the works of the above maths, is time - the use of "eventually" is pretty useful in theory, but in practice might take so long that before the "resemblance" does occur, we see the "black swan" event which could disturb the growth trajectories. Like Lembit Opik's asteroid.

I've thanked you in the hope I will appear quite knowledgable.
  • Where is the recovery going to come from? The falling pound should help and obviously inflation is not the main concern at the moment, but in the long run, a fall in the external value of a currency will result in a fall in the internal value of a currency i.e. inflation. Clearly there are much bigger issues at stake at the moment but, when the Central Bank has to keep interest rates low to prevent credit supply being totally choked then it can't use them in the traditional way to combat inflation. So the Bank has got some tough juggling to do.

    how to fix it?

My response is that every single man, woman and child older than 8 is going to have to grow or make things to sell - preferably sell to "abroad", for as long as we have Internet access. Especially to the countries east of us. We ought to start now because once the web servers and copper cables wear out they probably won't be repaired/replaced, and without Internet access most individuals can't sell to overseas customers.

I receive a huge number of unsolicited mail order catalogues for expensive "life style" stuff and before I throw them out I look through trying to work out how they managed, say, to design a waterbottle cover or a draught-excluder for which they judged people would pay 15 quid, even though it is merely knitted or made only of fabric and some stuffing. Not a sequin or Swarkovski (? spelling) bead in sight. The answer is, of course, "value added" but the secret is how to add the "right" value.

But we can't wait for the Government to create manufacturing industries.
    YouGov: £50 and £50 and £5 Amazon voucher received;
PPI successfully reclaimed: £7,575.32 (Lloyds TSB plc); £3,803.52 (Egg card); £3,109.88 (Egg loans)

It will come from within. We need to spend more money in our economy. Holidays in the UK, more local food, a return to eating in season, and the elimination of stupid foods - like Nigellas Juniper Berries.

Houses need to fall to FTB 3x joint income levels. Then houses will be less risk for the banks and a few more will offer 95% deals. House builders will build houses but individuals will work for a living.

We need the TV to change to Good Life type programmes from Location, L, L type. Encourage people to live more frugally and see fun in a traditional lifestyle. People need to go out and collect blackberries during a summer walk, not while walking around Asda.

Low mortgage interest rates and falling utility prices and lowering inflation will ease some pressure. Those in debt MUST realise how important it is to pay that debt down. Those who have been careful can hopefully enjoy spending their normal levels of spend with more value to them.

The High Street will contract. This will counter our need for much less tat and the fact the internet takes a propertion of sales.

One thing I would love to see is the return of the Holiday programme. All UK based. City breaks, country holidays and camping. We have always holidayed one year abroad and one year UK. There are so many really amazing places in the UK to explore. They should be encouraged. Camping is so much fun for children. Until people try it they just don't realise. The Scillies are incredible - but most of the UK don;t even knwo where they are. I'm not saying everyone should do the same thing but I would love to see a programme dedicated to the UK and rather than full of silly puns from overpaid actors, use characters who genuinely live in places to show people where to stay and visit.

Haven't they spent the last 11 years trying to kill them off?
