    Hi,

I'd be inclined to use other things such as ice cream, or margarine boxes... otherwise you'll end up running out of cooking dishes / pots.

    Many things can be bagged.

Others - you can put a bag inside a container, pour your soup/stew/whatever into the bag... then after freezing you can lift the bag out and you have the container free to use again.

I sometimes use old takeaway containers (although I understand you can't use these indefinately). I especially like these because then my 'fake away' meals seem more authentic.
I do try to avoid using my casserole/ceramic dishes for the reason given above! I love the idea of using freezer bags inside of containers though- that would tidy up my freezer somewhat!

Occasionally, although I agree with the previous answers that it can be awkward to lose the use of a cooking container. But because I'm only cooking for myself, when I make fish pie I have some nice dishes that are just right for fish pie for one. Since I have 8 of them I will make up 3/4 and freeze the spare ones.

I never put it into the oven from frozen though I have sometimes defrosted it in the microwave.

It's also a bit space consuming compared with other ways of freezing but for fish pie where I don't want to disturb the topping I feel it's almost inevitable.

    Good evening,

I have just brought home a small chest freezer which a friend very kindly gave us for free...yipee!
Now I have the space to store portions from batch cooking, does anyone have any ideas on the best storage boxes?

I have an old set from Ikea but none of them are right for a 2 people portion and they are a bit feeble/breakable.

I have looked on lakeland's website but am confused by sizes- what is the best size for 2?

I don't want to just buy loads of ice cream for the tubs as attempting to lose some weight.

I have searched for similar threads but can't find anything....so, what tubs do people use? Are the chinese takeaway ones good value as do they last?

    Thanks muchly :)

  • I use the cheap ones from poundshops and any takeaways I treat myself to. OK, they do get brittle when cold, but if you are careful, especially with the lids, they can last for ages. Some of mine could be nearly 5 years old now. As for size, I can get a single 200g to 250g portion of bolognese sauce, chilli con carne, curry sauce, etc. for me in a small 500ml tub. Some people also use freezer bags and use the tubs as moulds.

I find 1L containers just about right for two portions. I use the value ones from Mr T, about £1.50 for 3. They stack well and nest for storing away. But I also noticed that £land had the locking style tubs last time I was in there.
  • I do the same as Stephen, pound shops are great for freezer storage - they come in different shapes and sizes so you have a good choice :)
  • Home Bargains sometimes have a set of five plastic storage containers for 79p - they are like the ones you get from some takeaways, and fit one portion in nicely. For veg, I steam and freeze in single portions in food bags, but so they don't end up all over the freezer, I pop all the bags into a larger tub to keep them together. I just use cheap food bags - they microwave ok when you want to defrost and reheat. making single portions means that if I fancy carrots and my daughter wants green beans, we can both have what we want without any wastage - I'd rather use more food bags than waste food.
