Tesco Internet Banking? More like Blanking!!

After applying for Tesco Internet Banking account in early November, I have successfully gone through all the hurdles to get my account set up, my 4 different customer numbers/logins/passwords etc etc nicely written down, my Card, Pin and card reader all arrived last week (some 6 weeks after applying, note) so here I go to actually get to manage my account.
Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!
The first problem was mine and I hold my hands up to that. I managed to get my password wrong twice so the system comes up and tells me I am going for my third an last attempt. No problem, I know what I did wrong so hit "Continue".
This now takes me to a different screen for my third attempt. Now I need my SORT CODE and ACCOUNT NUMBER!!!! Where are they??? In the original letter from Tesco when I opened my account.
Luckily I am at home with my files, but supposing I had been away on business or on holiday. Why would I carry the account number and sortcode around as i only have on-line access, no Tesco bank card and don't usually need this information to log in on line. So I go upstairs to retrieve the 5th and 6th codes I need to get on line.
OK 3rd time lucky, I get on line into my account, check the balance (yes, that at least is correct) and, to test out my card, reader and pin, I hit the MANAGE button against my account so I can set up a payee.
Response "Sorry - page unavailable".
Try again - Deja Vu.
So I ring Tesco Finance and report my problem and, apparently, there is a known bug such as this if you have a Tesco Credit Card. But I don't, so why have I got it.
So, I am asked to leave my details and someone from technical support will ring me within 72 hours!.
Where did Tesco get the genius who thought up Tesco On-line banking procedures? I bank with about 5 or 6 banks on line.
I am only using Tesco as a shelter for some of my money given the current banking risk situation, but there is no way whatsoever that I would consider using them for anything that required regular access to my money and, as soon as the storms over the banks recedes, guess which account i will be closing first??

- None of them require you to go through the sign up rigmarole Tesco do
- none of them require you to have 4 different codes to get on line
- none of them then require you to have two additional codes for your 3rd attempt if you muck up two of them
- all of them then have web sites that seem to work if you want to set up a new payee

COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU MORE!
I’ve been working in IT for over a decade and have been internet banking for nearly as long and had more accounts than I care to remember.
I have never known such a convoluted and confusing system as the Tesco’s one.
Also, I prefer to receive interest on my money MONTHYLY, not YEARLY! I will probably wait until March when the interest is paid, and the remove and close this account, - it’s more hassle than it’s worth.

I agree too.
It's so much hassle to set up that you wonder why you waste your energy.
Took me ages to find where to click to log in.0 -
Well I'm going to stick with them while the bonus puts them so far above all other accounts. My only problem with them is that setting up the account takes so long at every stage(of which there are many!). BUT having gone through all that I have done test deposits and withdrawals successfully so am happy for now. Plus I can transfer from my HSBC account to Tesco instantly. I had read about this but never expected to see my money appear in the tesco account almost as soon as I had dispatched it. It was quite a pleasent shock.0

Totally agree. It took four weeks to set up my account. When the time came to transfer money I found I needed a card reader (Why not send one out automatically to new accounts?). Two weeks passed - no card reader. Phoned up customer services and told there were problems and would probably have to wait another 3 weeks for one!! - Probably the worse bank account I have had and when the card reader turns up will transfer money to a real bank0

After having to reregister at least 5 times, with code and signature form etc, despite entering correct details, I finally rang up on my Mum's behalf (posed as her) and blew my top today demanding the account be closed immediately. Was told they couldn't do that until I mentioned writing to Margaret Stone at moneymail and all of a sudden account closed, with acrued interest and cheque in post. We need some of the money to pay holiday balance within the month so cant fart about with them. But at least the clubcard points have been added so some good but the admin is a shambles for sure.0

I just tried to register for online banking (account applied for just before the 1.5% was withdrawn so I was thinking 3 weeks not too bad) and was told they would need a proof of signature - so what was wrong with the signature on the application form or the one on the cheque I sent when opening the account?!I think....0

This looks like a step I'd either forgotten about or missed in all the other threads about the perils of opening the Tesco account!
Like you, OH and I applied just before the bonus was withdrawn, got our forms, sent them back with cheques by RD, and they arrived at Tesco on 16 Jan. Nothing else received since... but then it is only 2 weeks on!
Why on earth not ask for proof of signature/ID to be sent when the application form is returned, instead of waiting till you register for online banking? Come to that, why the need to register for online banking at all when it's an online-only account?Crackers...

It is all slightly insane. My saga is thankfully over: after the application, and the signature verification, and the second signature verification, and the call for a registration number, and the interminable wait for a card reader...
I can finally put money into and take money out of a bank account.
Only took 3 months! :rotfl:
As others have said, I won't be opening any more new accounts with Tesco, or anyone else who is/was in the RBS group. Be patient guys, I know it's a hassle to set up the account, and some of the opening procedures defy logic, but really it's a great account!
Faster payments in and out, and 5.1% interest! (If you applied before 8 Jan). I personally love my tesco account. You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.0 -
I requested a new pin for my card reader on 18th December, the letter arrived over a month later but was dated 18th Dec. I'd like to know where its been sitting all this time??0
