This might seem a stupid question.
I'm looking at the bargain Dell laptop and see it has not got MS Office. Can I just use the disc with MS Office that I have on my 2 year old Dell desktop PC? Or is there a problem with the code already registered to the main PC.

    Rachel

yeah, unfortunately the DELL doesn't come with MS Office but only with MS Works, I'm sure it's ok to install office onto the laptop as long as you own the original CD's.
It takes 43 muscles to frown.........17 muscles to smile.......but only ONE CLICK to say THANKS..!!

Mine on order too. Interestingly, when I searched for this through Quidco, it wasn't available (well I couldn't find it!)

    Hi,

I agree with the quote above. Also, I believe that the Home edition of Office is licensed for use on 2 machines anyway, if I am not mistaken :)

    So, absolutely no problems.

If you want a cheap and legal alternative to office, try https://www.openoffice.org -its an open source version of Office :)

Am absolutely gutted!! Have been watching this forum, and dell.co.uk, and the ukdeals website desperate for a laptop deal, I have a day off and they go put a 1 day special on! Have subscribed to the dell email list, will I get emails about that type of thing then? How often do the deals come around?
  • Not got broadband at the moment so looking for the best/cheapest. I obviously then need a modem and router where will i get the best deal from? I have heard that you can get them all from the broadband provider??

    Regards Neil

Once I had configured it to be truly much better than my ancient Compaq that has 256 MB memory, e.g selected 512MB memory, upped the battery as suggested, upped disk to 60GB and dropped the support 90 days, came to £581. No need to get trampled in the rush for this one.

Having has some experience of MS bloatware, my feeling is that you need to try to future proof your spec. Actually 1GB memory is to be preferred.

The battery and screen upgrades were at reasonable prices. But the others weren't. Do you really need 60Gb on a laptop? And as for 512Mb RAM - I think it was £109 to go from 256->512 which is extremely unreasonable. For Home use - internet, and the occasional Word doc, I would argue that 256Mb/40Gb is fine for most people.

One thing I've found with Dell deals is that it is generally not worth deviating from the standard spec.

  • Just of the phone to dell. I said I wanted to cancel as the laptop was too expensive. They offered me 10% off I said 15% please and she said yes.

    6.5% off from quidco
    15% off from dell

with 6 Cell 56Whr Primary Battery [add £11.75] and Intel® Celeron® M Processor 370 (1.50 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 400 MHz FSB) [add £11.75] upgrades it brings it all in at under £300

    Bargain

Try it it may be worth while.

Hope this helps someone else to get a cheaper deal.

Pity that the upgrades are expensive like that - the area where my old lappy falls down is handling & storing multimedia things like pictures and sound, hence my desire for more memory & disk.

But at under £300 see above - looks a good deal anyway.
