muddlemess, My first DFD was 20 years, and yes, it terrifies me that I got in that position, espesh when some people could be debt free in 5! I'm lucky in that I've reduced it to 10, but in my eyes that's still a while!

Hi all, just been reading through the previous posts debating the merits or otherwise of asking for the CCA.

The reason I started on this path with some of my creditors was because they have started to act unreasonably, adding interest and charges again, £150 in one month alone in one case, harrassing me by phone and letter and threatening court etc. I got so angry:mad: that I had to do something to try to fight back and this is the only way I can see that will do any good.

As far as I can see I will be in a better position if it does come to court if I can say that the creditor hasn't got the CCA then I would be if I had never tried to find out if they had it or not.

Going to court scares the pants off me BUT I want to be as prepared as I can, which can only improve my position.
I'm not doing it with a view to stopping paying, I just want them to accept the amount I can afford.

Hope everyone who's feeling down is doing ok, what would we do without this thread to keep us all strong and motivated.
    Chin up everyone:beer:

Hi just wondered is anyone else on a DMP for 15 years? I can't beleive how long i've had my head buried in the sand....how did I manage to pay things for so long....

We are looking at 2022 now (was 2023 but slowly slowly wins the race :D), I hope by the end of our ppi reclaims we will knock a few more years off and look forward to being fully debt free in 10 years if we continue to pay the same DMP payment. Hopefully if OH work picks up we will be able to pay a bit more reducing the years even more.

I hate the fact that our debt free date it is that long away too BUT we have to stay positive and keep asking ourselves what our debt free date would be prior to the DMP? for instance OH was paying £300 to MBNA every month and was only paying off £1  yep one whole quid was coming off his bill due to excessive interest, ppi and extra charges on the account. Now we pay £300 on our DMP and it is making a difference to the debt whether a creditor gets £5 a month or £50, it IS coming off our total debt.

Our debt free date might be ages away yet but we no longer worry so much over debt, well ok the creditor letters might annoy us but we don't have to hide the bills in the drawer hoping somehow there would be a miracle payment in the bank to pay them :o

5, 10 ,15 years, it doesn't matter when you look back at how you were living or should I say trying to live every month, living hand to mouth just to pay cards and loans that just got on top, lying to yourself that you didn't have a problem with money and the credit you had simply got out of hand.

Anyway it's not all bad if we didn't spend all that money we wouldn't have met on here. Not just anyone can come on here and join our secret club you know :p :rotfl:

Joking aside I would rather have 10 years of debt on a DMP than go back to how things were ;)

I think of it this way, had I carried on spending on CC's, loans etc, I would have been in debt for ever:eek:
At least this way, no matter how long in the future my dfd is, at least I've got a chance of getting there now, and as Toffee says claiming stuff back like ppi, and bank charges can go to bring the date forward even me.
We WILL get there in the end:j

Its so hard to brreak old habits isnt it, but the difference is no O/D or C/C to fall back on now, if the money isnt there we are stuck!!

I find it surprising to say I actually find this a good thing! Never thought i'd say it and thought i'd feel quite helpless without od and cc's. In fact I feel more in control than before!

Probably the biggest surprise for me! I now know if the money isn't there i can't have it and i have to cut back!

Me too! I feel so much more in control now, and I know its going to change my spending habits for good....I look at home and think what have I got to show for my spending, and the answer is nothing, so its a hell of a lot of debt for no real reason!!

We're starting to put money away now for our wedding from the extra bits of cash I'm managing to save while on DMP (not much but its better than nothing!) ....so I have a savings account with money in for the first time in years, plus I'll have something nice to show for it all at the end! x
    :j Only 5 years until I'm debt free! :j

i have been lurking for a while checking on how you are all getting on with your dmp. i decided couple of weeks ago that i too would try going it alone as was getting no where with any of the agencies. they all advised different things and to be honest was not happy carrying out any of it. did send sar request to halifax who i have £8556.91 still owing in personal loan and to lloyds who i have credit card with for £5664.93. have received various bits of info from both, both did manage though to send copy of signature. also owe £12,884.90 to tax credits, some of it is being disputed and they have accepted £30 a month for time being on rest. with this conquest bouying me up i decided to ring halifax who up until now were only receiving £10 here and there. i asked them about setting up dmp myself and would they cancel future charges, interest etc, for once had someone helpful who said the only way that they offer this is either through an agency direct or completing a national debt helpline budget which not only gives you your surplus income but also adds up all you owe creditors and gives a figure you should give them all. so 21 april i did just that and sent with a template letter requesting interest froze etc and now am waiting. the offer worked out to be £113.20 a month which is not very far removed from the £191 they were supposed to get, so fingers crossed. as for lloyds not getting anywhere fast all i know is that i have been passed to a debt team who will be in touch. that was weeks ago the offices are in india and i really have problems making myself understood so depending on out come from halifax and whether i hear anything from lloyds at all this week. i will keep you posted, sorry its so long

Spoke to Payplan yesterday who have confirmed that 7 our of our 9 creditors have all accepted the DMP.
Egg Loan have never contacted us after we informed them of the DMP and we only have 1 letter from them since we started.
MBNA continue to send defaults almost every 2 weeks!! and are threatening to pass to a DCA ( I wish they would!! ).
NO calls from my friends Aegis or from Barclaycard, and, even though they have accepted the DMP parments, have sent a statement showing added interest and a minimum payment request greater than the DMP payment they have been allocated.!

MBNA Virgin wrote a very nice letter saying they accept the DMP for £50 a month ( DMP is for £51 ) :)

Citi Card wrote a very condicending letter saying they have reviewed our credit rating and have dropped our credit to £200 ( From £10,000 ) but this account was paid up and cleared before we started the DMP, so they recieved a sh!tty letter with the card cut into 4 saying "I trust you treat all your customers this way, please poke the card and close the account". - its not the fact they reduced the credit limit, we were going to close the account anyway once we had confirmation off them the balance was Zero, but the way the letter was worded. Loyalty ... Yer right ... you make the payments, and clear the account BEFORE going on a DMP and this is the way they treat you .... !

Sorry for the rant.. this boils my urine !

    Helloo :)

I'm about to start a DMP .. with Payplan or myself.. (still undecided) Eeek!.

    Anyway..
Something I was wondering.. In December I got a sofa from DFS.. (not a luxury job.. I've had the same sofa for 20yrs.. and it cost me £15 back then! haha .. It fell apart... The new one was a necessity ~ I think)

Anyway.. how does that stand on a DMP? Will paying for it still be the same as the other debts? .. or will they come and take the sofa back? :(

Also.. Ebay.. (Havent used it for years).. But I was thinking of selling some things.. What happens to THAT money? .. Do I have to tell Payplan so they can add it to my payments? (it would only be LITTLE money) ... Or do I get to keep it and decide myself?

What happens with extra money you may get.. like your tax/mileage thing back each year.
I have NEVER claimed mine for my work.. (I drive a lot for work, my petrol) .. Someone told me I can claim as far back as 6yrs... But anyway.. what happens to money like that?

Sorry to be a dummy :(
Very proud of trying to deal with my debts. LBM 04/09
