My old Mums favourite saying was 'if you don't eat your greens you won't get any pudding' ,probably come across as 'child-abuse' in these PC days but it worked as I always ate my veggies,in those far off frugal days of rationing you ate what ever was put in front of you.if I didn't then one of my hungry brothers would.0

I was born the year rationing ended and we were told the same. Sometimes it was filling up on bread and butter rather than a pudding but we were all in rude health then and have been since.0

Thanks so much for this, I made one of these last night and it was yummy!! 3 old apples from the fruit bowl and some left over mincemeat have been used and everyone approved!!

With summer coming up you can make frozen banana covered in chocolate. In the home baking section of the supermarket, you will find 'chocolate flavoured cake covering' or similar - this is much cheaper than normal chocolate as it doesn't contain much cocoa butter, but tastes pretty chocolatey and is good for this recipe as it melts easily and covers the banana evenly. Cut a banana into thin-ish slices (5mm or so) and dip them into melted chocolate, then place on greased paper/foil etc. Once set, chuck them into a ziplock bag or a tub and freeze. A couple of those are a satisfying chocolatey treat, and not too unhealthy with the banana. They taste a lot like banana flavoured ice-cream.The texture is a bit more solid, but I really enjoy them.

I was quite surprised to realise confectionary and desserts add up to around 40% of my food spend on average, up to around 66% on a very sugary week. I found that pretty shocking to be honest!
I resolved to do two things about it:-
1. Eat only one sugary thing a day as of now.
2. Buy cheaper desserts- posh tiramisu might be gorgeous but it's expensive.
I decided cheap dessert/confectionary meant 50p or less per portion. Confectionary for under 50p is easy, dessert is harder.
I bought jelly (19p) and custard (44p) which served 2 adults very well indeed, so it came to 31.5p each for a (big) portion and it was most enjoyable/ nostalgic. Big tick for that one.
Then I had another think but found myself stumped for other ideas. What desserts can you come up with that are just cheap by nature such as jelly? There must be loads but I swear I can't think of any!
Well there's ride pudding (rice plus milk and bake) but that's only really justifiable if you're feeding a family coz the oven's on for 2&1/2 hours.
