I'm like Pink-winged. I love sweet stuff, but we've never been a "pudding" house. They don't need it! Some fruit is great, and all they need. They'll get a pudding at school, too.

With summer coming up you can make frozen banana covered in chocolate. In the home baking section of the supermarket, you will find 'chocolate flavoured cake covering' or similar - this is much cheaper than normal chocolate as it doesn't contain much cocoa butter, but tastes pretty chocolatey and is good for this recipe as it melts easily and covers the banana evenly. Cut a banana into thin-ish slices (5mm or so) and dip them into melted chocolate, then place on greased paper/foil etc. Once set, chuck them into a ziplock bag or a tub and freeze. A couple of those are a satisfying chocolatey treat, and not too unhealthy with the banana. They taste a lot like banana flavoured ice-cream.The texture is a bit more solid, but I really enjoy them.

My OH is a desserto'holic, I open a tin of peaches and put them in jelly, lasts the two of us for 3 days, oranges in lime jelly are good too I have quite a bit of frozen fruit in the freezer and I often put strawberries in jelly, the frozen straws help the jelly to set and they hold their shape.

I recently found packets of blancmange 5 packets for £1 made with a pint of milk. Baked jam sponge done in the oven when you are cooking the supper, serve with custard. I have also done it with golden syrup in the bottom, lemon curd is nice too.Tray bake bakewell tart made with almond essence, cut it into slices, line a tin with pastry and make a sponge mix, add dried fruit and sprinkle a little demerra suger on the top again cut in slices. Same thing spread cheap jam on the bottom and top with sponge with coconut. Cut into slices. Just a few ideas. The tray bakes when cold can be used in lunch boxes for school/work. Oh I forgot bread and butter pudding made with stale bread.....scrummy.

Ok, my budget has been put on a drastic diet again, with in healthy limits my food budget can be cut back to £15-20pw (thats 1/2 adults and 2 children) It wouldnt hurt me to loose a few lbs so im quite happy to skip or eat dust for a meal, lol. We survive fairly well on pasta dishes, pies, stews and rubber chicken

I work as a Monry Adviser for CAB. Can I ask why your budget is so low? With 2 children you get £34 ish pw child benefit, plus child tax credits if you're on a low income.

If you're struggling this much, you might want to post your statment of affairs (SOA) on the Debt free board, and they'll be able to help you increase your food budget.

Good luck, Penny. x

Back in the 'frugal fifties ' we often had condensed milk on bread
'conny onny sanwiches' no wonder my generation ended up with a mouth full of fillings but condensed milk has a taste of its own:D:rotfl:

A favourite in our house is jelly thats for sure, but I also use the fruit cobbler recipe I found on this site. It cheap and quick and tasty.

Quick Fruit Cobbler
Crust begins on the bottom & ends up on the top. Consistency of cobbler varies depending on variety of fruit and amount of juice, but still tastes delicious.
Preheat oven to 180 C
Combine in bowl
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
Pour into 9x 9 inch greased baking pan
Add
2 cups fruit - fresh, frozen or canned
Bake for 40 minutes

All this talk of puddings has also reminded me of a sweet supper dish my mum would make for us which was just a bowl of sweetened warm milk with torn up bits of bread in it. It was delicious!
