Hi Jo_R, Please please don't do the things you think about. Have you actually told your gp and psychiatrist that you have these thoughts? You can change to another psychiatrist if you feel he/she is not taking your problems seriously. I really understand about wanting to do stuff, and being plagued by thoughts. Sometimes I have to go to bed and lie on my hands so I can't use them to hurt myself. I never have more than two packets of painkillers in the house at one time, and if my OH buys some extra I put all the painkillers (and sometimes knives if its a bad day) in a bag and make him take them with him if he leaves the house - he puts them in the car with him, don't worry he doesn't carry them around to stab/poison people!
Stay strong, you can get through this. You have go this far, don't give up now, and please don't do the things that you think about.
Tiff, you and your family are in my thoughts, take care"Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together."

hey folks, sorry not been on for a bit.
leaving for the docs in half an hour so dont know if this will get answered in time but am hoping to get him to diagnose my depression, my mum is a shrink and she has diagnosed me previously, but I am worried that doctor will basically laugh at me and say that there is nothing wrong.
It's getting really bad just now and I can't face work (or anything else really- with a reputation as life of the party I've even had bar managers emailing me to make sure I'm ok because I haven't been out) and I was hoping for a bit of a sick line to see if I can get back on top.
Has anyone here been diagnosed by a GP and how were they with you about it?0 -
I used to be a party person. Just wanted to be out dancing and partying all the time. Now you have to drag me out kicking and screaming! Hardly want to leave the house, just happy in my own world. I find social situations quite stressful and this is one of the symptoms of depression.
In my experience, 98jdougl, a doctor will ask you lots of questions, eg. about your sleep and if you wake up early and if you have other symptoms of depression. If you have a lot of the symptoms then he will diagnose depression and may prescribe anti-depressants. Of course, he may not. They don't necessarily help everybody. But I would be very surprised if you were laughed at. Depression is awful and is absolutely no joke so a doctor who reacted in this way would be behaving very unprofessionally.0 -

I hope you got on OK at the GP, and I especially hope your concerns about being laughed at were completely unfounded, because that should never happen.
But now, to repeat what Glad said ...This thread is a continuation of THIS THREAD
Clinical depression is a recognised condition that affects people in many different ways often altering the sufferers personality and ability to function in a 'normal' manner. It can affect thinking, judgement, and social behaviour in ways that cause serious problems and embarrassment.
If the depression support thread on MSE is to continue it must be remembered that not all posters on this thread will always be able to express their feelings in a nice, sociable way.
If you find the posts of any particular member difficult to deal with then the ignore facility is available. Just as one person may not be in a place where they can post 'nicely', another may not be in a place where they are able to read said posts.

Please respect the fact that MSE allows this thread on what is a moneysaving site

Hugs to all who need them, especially Tiff.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
if anything I remember when I went to see my company doctor for back pains, she saw straight away I was suffering from depression and told me to take 3 weeks sick leave, it was me who laughed and said you gotta be kidding, I've got too much work to do. It wasn't until a few weeks later I saw my own GP and within minutes he also told me I'm suffering from depression, The only place I'm going is home and he even offered to ring my boss. He had signed me off for 3 weeks, in the end I was off work for 1 year and then lost my job. I remember this great weight being lifted when I finally accepted I was ill and needed help. So please don't worry no doctor will make light of your condition.0
