Where exactly do you see this message "cannot connect to server?" Please be more specific. Did you go to the above link in Firefox and read it?

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at support.microsoft.com.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
This is the message that comes up when I try your link or microsoft.comRegards

Try this
If that doesn't work try working through these links:
http://windows-help.net/WindowsXP/troub-10.html
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers2.htm#secure_sites
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/data/jjblack.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813444
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303807
If they don't help, you'll have to do an XP repair install, unless one of the other techies has got any other ideas.
