Burgalar Alarm PIR Sensors 'churp'

Options
Just moved into a property with a Veritas 8 burgalar alarm, however the PIR sensors 'churp' every time they sense movement. I have read the manual, and found the installation manual but can't find anything to turn this off.

Anybody got any ideas?

Also do I need to get this serviced? I did a test today off the internal bell, external bell and strobe and it all works ok.

I don't know much about alarm systems but if they are wireless sensors i would guess the batteries in the sensors may need replacing.

Where is the 'chirp' coming from, the control panel or the actual sensors?

Sounds like Chime is switch on, whenever a detector is set off the control box makes a sound. We have it turned on for the garage sensor.

Check the user guide again, it should say how to turn Chime off.

  • Hi, just checked and they are wired not wireless.

    Anybody else got any ideas?
  • Hi Sparky7

The churp comes from the PIR sensors, not from the keypad or control unit.

I have checked chime, and enabled it for one sensor, and then removed it and when it was enabled the sound comes from the keypad and the control box.

But I can't seem to be able to turn this off and it is annoying now!

    Cheers
  • Having fitted thousands of PIR's i have never heard one chirp.Interesting.
Is it definately the alarm system?I have been called out a number of times for 'the alarm is making a wierd noise' and it turns out its the smoke detector, perhaps the battery needs changing?

    HTH.

    Ben.
  • It is 100% the PIR sensors. It only make the chirp noise when it senses movement and the small LED comes on to show that it has also identified movement.

The noise also is definetly coming from the individual PIR sensor, not from the the control unit or the keypad.

If I try and take the PIR front off will it set the alarm off with a tamper?

Also so I need to get the unit serviced? If I pull the switch in the fuse board for the alarm should this start the backup battery working and therefore tell if it is ok or not?
  • If you pull the mains fuse the battery should kick in but you will not know how long it will last, this needs to be tested properly.

If you take the lid off the PIR then it should go off if it has been wired properly.

I have been reading the Veritas user manual and the only bit i can see to make the alarm 'chirp' is a pre programmed service reminder.

''The system has a service timer which may be programmed by the
installer to give a reminder when maintenance in due. The reminder may
be either turning Chime on or preventing the system from being set.
Chime may be turned off as previously described. In either case contact
    your installer.''

''To Turn CHIME On or Off
To turn Chime on or off press ). The system will sound the chime tone
when Chime is turned on and an error tone when Chime is turned off.
If no zones have been programmed to Chime then turning Chime on
and off will have no effect.''

    HTH.

    Ben.
  • Removing the cover even with the mains power off will set off the tamper. You need to access the maintenance/set up through the control panel. I've never heard a sensor chirp either. They don't usually have any components in them that make a sound. What make/model are they?

  • Please see attached picture of the PIR. All PIR sensors make the same chirp noise when they detect movement and the LED comes on.

I have read the engineers installation manual which I found on the Internet for the Veritas alarm. Like you CurlyFairy I thought it might be chime but am I right in thinking that the Chime sound somes from the alarm box, not from the PIR?

Also thought it might be something to do with a reminder for maintenance but nothing describes this in the manual.

Short of getting every PIR replaced I don't know what to do!
