Two wrongs do not make a right.

You did not have a valid ticket, and therefore should have either paid for a full price ticket or left the train when requested.

Well done to the conductor for standing his ground, and the Transport Police for responding so promptly.

He had paid for his ticket ,due to no fault of his own the train company failed to issue a valid ticket .........he could prove he had paid .

Just imagine going into tescos ,paying for your shopping and then the till didnt produce a receipt ................does that mean the goods arent yours?

Not really comparing like with like there. If you wanted to get a refund for something at Tesco, do you think they'd give you one if you produced the receipt but not the goods ? They wouldn't, because for all they know you could have just sold the goods on or still have them.

The OP made an 'assumption' that it would be OK to board and sort it out.

It isn't ok, and there are plenty of Black and Yellow posters advising passengers of the penalty fare rules at Waterloo (and every other SWT station).

I have not yet had time to digest this thread in its entirity and will do so after work, in the meantime I have some passnegers to harass.;)

I wouldnt bother with this thread - it is over six months old, someone posted a reply to it instead of starting a new thread :)

A frequent scam is to purchase tickets over the internet, collect them at the station and then pretend to the guard/other staff that the machine wouldn't recognise your card in an attempt to travel without showing the tickets. After the journey is complete the tickets are then submitted for a refund or passed to someone else for use a second time.

Not saying the OP did this but it is something that happens and is a reason why a reference number/receipt is not valid for travel in lieu of a ticket.

  • Last year we arrived at a station to find that there was a queue at the ticket office and that the automatic ticket machine only took coins, not notes. Our train was pulling into the station and we needed to get on it in order to catch a flight.

We were pleasantly surprised when a chap in uniform told us that we should get on the train and pay the conductor. So we did this and explained what had happened to the very pleasant woman who came checking tickets. She took our fare and issued us with the tickets at the correct price, using her remote ticket printer which was wirelessly connected to the train's computer.

The train was clean, modern and ran on time. The staff were friendly and there was no attempt to fleece us for penalty fares. Excellent service.

By the way, did I mention that this happened in France?;)

The same thing also happens in Northern Ireland. Unless you're at a major station, if you're late for your train, you run and buy the ticket on the train! Maybe that's why NI Railways got the UK Rail business of the year! All the operators in the rest of the UK seem to be a shambles from what I hear, with over crowding, hugely expensive fares and unhelpful staff.

  • Why should anyone be treated like this whenever it is the railway companies fault that a ticket couldn't be collected in the first place?
