I think my dentists charge nearer the £300 for a veneer.

 I'm glad I had mine done a few years ago then! I did expect a price hike but not quite that much. Then again I live in Wales, maybe it's cheaper here than where you live seeing as it's private practice not NHS charges which I assume would be the same wherever someone lives..

Thanks fot the info. I would like all mine done but I think I would need film star wages to pay for it. I wonder why it's so expensive? Maybe I could get it done cheaper as a 'guinea pig' at dental school.

Why do you want them veneering?

If they are OK, but a bit crooked, and not as white as you'd like, then you will be starting with something that could potentially last you your lifetime with very little maintenance (Your own natural teeth), and whacking away perfectly healthy enamel to replace with porcelain.

This porcelain will last about 5-6 years on average before it needs replacing. It will stain and chip much worse than enamel, they will fall off every now and again. They will be a lot harder to maintain, and they will be much more expensive to maintain.

There are some situations in which they are not a bad way to restore a tooth, but for heavily filled teeth then some of the less invasive crowns are probably better and more long lasting.

Don't get veneers done for cosmetic reasons unless there is absolutely no other way of improving things, and unless you can budget to get them re-done at fairly frequent intervals.

    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks for the advice. My teeth aren't that bad but I fancy a 'film star' smile. Vain I know, but there you go ! I have had them bleached but I thought the end result would be whiter than they were. I thought veneers would make them whiter  . Maybe I should concentrate on my inner beauty and save my money. It is moneysavingexpert after all. :money:

    I would agree 100%

Bleaching is an excellent non-invasive way of improving your teeth (But always get it done properly by a dentist). And it's still your same unsullied low maintenance enamel at the end of it all.

Your teeth will never match the fridge - and it would look really wierd if they did!

You really don't want to end up looking like my avatar - but if you really really do - make sure you have the money to maintain it, which will mean you will spend much much longer in the dental chair over the rest of your life!!!!! Ask any Hollywood star!

I noticed a report a few months ago about Paris Hilton needing a root filling. I would consider myself a complete failure if a patient of mine needed a root filling in her mid 20s. Especially one with access to such good dental care as she.

My bet is she has had so much 'unnecesary' stuff done that something eventually is bound to object and die.

If you have money though, you will always find someone to do things you want, rather than tell you that it shouldn't be done.

    Hello Toothsmith

Wish you practised in my area!

I have crowns either side of my front teeth, nothing wrong with enamel, but my two front teeth are gradually getting shorter or wearing away a little and I don't think it looks very nice, I feel as if I am starting to talk funny because of it, or at least look funny when I talk. I am over 50, anything that can be done for this?

    Thank you

I'd need to actually see it to advise here, but I wouldn't do anything until the cause of the wear had been identified and dealt with.

Teeth wear, but porcelain just fractures!

    Do you bite your fingernails?

Thank you for your reply toothsmith

I only bite my nails occasionally if I am nervous about something, but not all the time. I just thought that with age, teeth do wear down and I wondered if anything could be done, do you do tooth extensions:rotfl:

Veneers are probably a good idea in your case - they could get the result you want. It might be an idea to try building up the tooth with a bit of white filling first, as although not cheap - and not really as 'good' as veneering, it is cheaper than veneering, and wouldn't damage the teeth in any way at all.

White filling, skillfully built up, can look very good indeed. But it will chip and break off if the factors that have caused the wear are still active. But it's a lot cheaper and less destructive if that all breaks down than if veneers are made and all start to fall to bits.

In your other post about your bridge, I said that I think you have a good dentist. I would ask him what he thinks about the situation, and what can be done.

Nail biting IS a very destructive habit for the teeth. I would really try and stop it altogether if you are contemplating having anything expensive and porcelain done at the front of your mouth!

If people ever ask me about veneers, the first thing I look at are the nails. If they have any sign of biting, I simply refuse to do veneers.
