What is more important is to tackle what it is that is causing "enamel to come away" otherwise you will have more than these two teeth with problems and veneering or whatever will not stop more damage bieing done..
Ah, no more damage will be done!

Off to the dentist on Thursday0 -
I would be totally honest with the dentist about the cause. We see lots of people with eating disorders and ,to be honest, the pattern of tooth destruction normally tells us that people are bulimic. However few people admit to the problem and so dentists can be reluctant to do more complex treatment because in someone with an active eating disorder providing complex treatment just hastens tooth destruction.
So be open with your dentist about your past problems and how long things have been under control. It's nothing to be ashamed of and the more open you are the more appropriate treatment you will get.0 -
I too had tetracycline staining from having to take the medicine years ago, I had to take it due to suffering with bronchitis. About 11 years ago I had veneers fitted on the NHS due to the discolouration. My teeth were very discoloured. Since this time I've moved about a bit and had to wait 3 years to get in to see a dentist only to be told each tooth would cost me £250 and I could only have one done each visit.
My problem is 7 of my 8 veneers are now missing and my teeth are looking pretty black coloured with one obviously looks like it's going bad. It's really effecting me now, I don't smile and can't afford to pay £250.00 per tooth. It's really depressing me now and they look terrible.
I just wish I had never had them done in the first place. Yes, I needed dental treatment regularly due to the staining etc and I always got it done on the NHS but now I feel like I've been thrown out with the rubbish and cannot afford to pay for something that is simply just not my fault! Yes, before they were discoloured but they wern't going bad like they are now. When the veneers fell off the taste and smell of what was underneath was disgusting. The dentist that origionally did them refused to replace the origional one that fell off because I'd moved out of the area and hadn't been back for a check up and where I moved to was notoriously bad for finding a dentist. It was years before I became accepted by a dentist and by that time all except 1 had fallen off!
Any advice gratefully received0 -
What are you hoping to gain re advice? That reads badly but it isnt meant to. I am just trying to establish your goals. We cant really advise on clinical grounds as we can not see you. It isnt uncommon for a practice to stop seeing you if you do not keep up attendance with them. Practices especially those offering NHS care have massive demand and an individual dentist simply can not operate an open door policy as there simply isnt enough hours in the day. I myself strictly control who I see so that I can offer the best care with a reasonable time frame to my regular patients. As a new patient to me it is highly unlikely you would get 7 or 8 veneers from me. I would probably refer you to a specialist if I am honest. Discounting the personal cost I would have to foot if you were to be seen as an NHS patient, I Would not be happy taking on such treatment with a history you indicate. From what I See, your options are a) pay for private veneers either with that practitioner or another or b) see if you can be referred to a restorative dentistry department at a hospital. Veneers do NOT last forever and it is important to realise that they place you in to a high need bracket. Simply not going in for regular visits is not really an option with these things and an acceptance that they will need to be changed within about 10 - 15 years.0

This is some interesting reading - thanks guys for the input so far. I too suffered from tetracycline staining as a child, and had veneers FOC on NHS when I was about 16 (about 12 years ago now). There is a small amount of wear along the bottom, but nothing noticable, and are in very good condition still. Problem being is that apart from the staining across my 2 front teeth I have natuarally white teeth, so the veneers attached were mismatched to my natural colour. Apparently they were the lightest varient available on the NHS (from their off the shelf veneers!), but compared to my light-white natural teeth, they are noticably yellow. Like many have mentioned - you cannot underestimate the impact of poor teeth can have on your confidence - I still don't like smiling in photos and am very aware of which colour lipsticks make me look worse! I enquired a few months ago the cost of private replacement veneers from my NHS dentist, and was a bit taken aback when I was told in the region of £1000 per tooth! Luckily I only have 2 that require replacement, and I would be happy to pay that amount for BOTH, but to shell out £2k sounds excessive. Any advice on what a reasonable price should be in Kent/South East? I want a decent job done that will likely last me another 10+ years, so I am willing to pay for decent work, but I'm finding it hard to track down an accurate idea of pricing. What are the benefits of composites vs. porceline? Is it likely my existing ones are composite, based on the fact they were NHS and not a custom colour? If so, I think I would be more than happy to return to composites based on how well they have lasted me.
Thanks in advance!!...Money spending expert since 1983....0 -
Difficult to say without seeing you but in general composites stain and wear faster than porcelain.
There was no such thing as an off the shelf veneer 12 years ago but certainly the lab would not have had as wide a choice of porcelain colours.
As to costs for veneers it's a bit like asking how much a car costs. £1000 a veneer would normally be a high end cosmetic clinics work and at the other end £275 may be a private charge in a less expensive area. £275 to £400 a piece would be a middle ball park figure.
However the main thing is to find a recommended dentist to do them don't rely on adverts by "cosmetic" dentists. Matching just two veneers to existing teeth can be very difficult and a private dentist may have to figure in the costs of remaking the veneers or customising them to blend in.Without seeing you it's difficult to judge how hard a job it might be. Tetracycline staining can be notoriously difficult to disguise as teeth can go very dark.0 -
when i was at school i was pushed over by the class bully and my two font teeth snapped. i was given white cement fillings on the teeth and they have lasted really well they do stain so badly even with excessive cleaning and i have had them filled down a few times. this happened 13 years ago and with getting married in 2016 i want to have beautiful white teeth would you recomend veneers or crowns?
thank you x0 -

Photoshop?
Seriously, it will be much less damaging in the long run!
How good does the composite build-up look just after it's been done? Why not plan to have it done a few weeks before the wedding?
Just building up the damaged bit does no further damage to the tooth, whereas veneers will do a little bit more damage, and crowns will do a lot more damage.
There are a lot of very good dentists out there that can do some really good things with white filling. (Yours might even be one of them). You have plenty of time to look around and find one if you feel you need to.
I, obviously, haven't seen your teeth. It could well be that veneering or crowning is appropriate for you, but don't rush into whacking more tooth off just to replae it with porcelain. It all needs maintenance, and the more tooth that is removed, the more destructive that maintenance will become. How to find a dentist.

i think it looks good natural even though it feels a bit 'lumpy'
does it matter how often you get the filling taken off and put back on? thank you for your help0 -

Generally speaking, no. ( I can't give specific information for you, as I can't see you)
That's the beauty of minimally invasive treatments such as this. You can do them again and again with little to no damage to your remaining tooth structure.
If something needs replacing because decay has set in, then you need to take away the decay too - which damages the tooth that little bit more eah time, but if the discoloured filling can be removed and replaced without touching the tooth underneath, then it can be replaced any number of times. How to find a dentist.
