  • I seem to remember Girls Aloud were runners up to someone whose name I don't know (really - I don't know if I don't remember, if I never knew it or if I'm completely wrong lol) and Will Young was the runner up to Gareth Gates, I think. My 10yo likes Leona Lewis, at the moment, but she is one of those kids who gets very caught up in hype and will be on to the 'next big thing' as soon as it comes around (as long as it isn't this years winner as she really can't stand her, she fancied Eoghan ).

They'll all have a 'Butlins' career though ;)
Did you know that one of the previous winners of the X-factor now apparently sings cabaret on the Bilbao-Southampton ferry!!!

It's funny you say that as Alexandra comes across very much (to me anyway) as a cabaret singer and I can see her fulfilling that role and not being the diva she seems to think she is.

Is this that person, perchance? :p

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • shes a regular jane mcdonald. lol.

girls aloud were in that popstars the rivals thing where they were making a girl group and a boy group and the boy group flopped after one single or something. Its quite sad that i remember that.

But anyone remember hear'say? they won popstars and liberty X were the five people who lost and they had a longer career.

so maybe JLS will end up trumping the one trick pony

Girls Aloud and One True Voice were created in the final, and competed for the Xmas number 1, which I think GA got with Sound of the Underground. One True Voice soon dis-banded.

Will Young did actually win Pop Idol, even though nearly everyone thought Gareth Gates would get it. Both are doing OK with GG about to take over from Lee Meads as Joseph

Formulaic as it maybe, they tick most if not all of the boxes:

    'Cute' one check
    'Cheeky' one check
    'Serious' one check
'Good Looking' one - maybe (it's relative and I can't remember what any of them look like and they're all far too young for me lol)
Can sing love songs meaningfully to camera check
Can harmonise and choreograph together check

Cynical as I maybe, do you think they try to extend the 'value' of brand X Factor by manipulating the vote so that the one out of the 3 finalists with the least chance of a good career wins (based on the runners up being more successful). For example, we all know the voting is manipulated by the songs they sing, what they wear, who they sing with and what the judges say - do you think that maybe they look to see who'll have the best career and 'manipulate' them to runners up and then pick the one who'll get the christmas number one and not much else and give them the best chance of winning - thereby draining more money from brand X Factor?

Maybe I didn't explain that too well, but I think you can make out what I mean! :rotfl:

ETA - having said that I couldn't name any of the finalists/runners up from last year and whether or not they have a career now so maybe I'm too cynical for my own good (Same Difference rings a bell though - were they from last year?)

LOL - shows how much attention I pay! I have no idea who the man in the picture is either :o Whatever happened to that man from 'Joseph' who sang "I have been promised a show of my own" in the goodbye song instead of the proper words - he ever been heard from again?

That's good. I think part of the problem, and I include myself here to a certain extent, is that we (Joe Public) only consider these people to be really successful if they are constantly in the top 10 or headlining the West End and/or the newspapers, when, in fact, it's possible to have a good career without the fame that these 2/3 scenarios provide. About half of my CD collection, and almost all of that of my OH (which are separate as they are poles apart :rotfl:), has never even sniffed the top 30 as it wouldn't be considered to be 'commercial' as such - but it doesn't mean it's not good music written and performed by good artists.
