Christmas Dinner (preparing in advance)

  • I didn't mean to criticise - I just don't think I could do it! I think I'd try to change other things rather than cook dinner and transport it. Maybe take some presents over to inlaws today so they have a pile to open there tomorrow to play with...? And then you'll have room in the boot to take others that they open an home? And then inlaws get to see them opening presents as well. Just a thought.... Anyway, whatever you decide I hope it works out and you have a fantastic time!
  • Can't they take some presents with them? We always went to my Nan's for lunch on Christmas Day leaving our toys behind. It isn't the end of the world and I suspect your P-i-L would be pleased to see them playing with some toys at theirs. Have your P-i-L got presents for them that they will be able to play with?

Otherwise as said, I'd cook the meat, par boil pots and drive to theirs, where you'll need the oven hot. Take prep'd veggies with you so you just need to stick them in pans. If you're unsure what M-i-L has in her kitchen then I'd take a couple of knives (esp carving knife), oven gloves and roasting tin for pots.

    Good luck!

Meat will be fine cooked at yours then double wrapped in foil and a towel to rest and keep warm on the journey aand when you get there to do the veggies, sauce etc.. Take presents to unwrap with you or if they have to be all opened before you go each child takes two things to play with when they are there. Cling film over mash or a lidded bowl will stop it drying out if you take it ready done.

Yeah it's carrot and swede mash.

don't they dry out if you do them in advance?

Should be fine but sprinkle a little water over top if unsure.
  • Made my soup - leek and potato
Made my desert - malted milk cheesecake
Red Cabbage - out of the freezer made earlier in the month and took my meat out to defrost.

Spent most of the day getting out / preping stuff for tonights buffet. Home made stuff includes lamb koftas, sausage rolls, feta and spinich bites and sticky chicken drummers. Also baking some biscuits, cakes and mince pies.

Bought soup, sausages in bacon, stuffing, and turkey crown from local farm shop on Tuesday. I work full time, that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.
Organic veg box & Xmas pudd delivered today, will prep veg tonight.
Still got a few presents to wrap tonight too, and need to do a quick whizz round with Henry and a duster :o

Creme brulee made and in fridge. Stuffing balls (chestnut sage & onion) made and in fridge, ready for the oven (although some accidentally got eaten). Braised red cabbage in the oven. Stuffed apple with brown sugar, raisins and mixed spice also in the oven, because I peeled too many apples for the cabbage so thought I'd scoff one instead :D

I need to make meringues to use up the egg whites from the creme brulee, but I have no oven space as my huge cast iron casserole is in there, so I'll do that later, it'll take only a few minutes.
  • Nothing to do for us, off xmas day and boxing day for meals cooked by family!! Plus I'm sure we'll come home with some leftovers too
Just bumbling along, trying to save some money

  • It's Xmas Eve and we have all hands on deck to prepare: sprouts, spuds, carrots, parsnips, broccoli.

Duck has been defrosting all day as have the prawns.

Everything else has been located and ready for tomorrow - there are only four of us so it's a posh Sunday Roast.
