The router should automatically issue an IP address to any PC connected e.g. if you do the ipconfig command from your desktop, you should see the IP address that has been issued to the desktop.

I can see the IP address on desktop.
laptop has not got anything on i, for me to insert a ethernet cable..how bizarre
no laptop does not have the Vista Operating system
Its windows 2000 professional....?

I never use USB WiFi dongles, so I can only suggest that you read the troubleshooting section in the user manual for your USB dongle regarding not getting an IP.:doh: Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

Desktop is connected to router via Ethernet cable, so I have pc and laptop side by side at the moment, keep trying to do things on laptop, using wrong keyboard, then click why it's not working..
So yes thats how I'm able to post.
PC has Ethernet cable going into Netgear router
Router has cable going into Modem, and all word brill on PC
it's just the laptop..
I have a wireless usb stick for laptop, which has all been installed ok,
How do I go about getting a valid IP address, has it's obviously not working on laptop...

Thanks to everyone for any help and support, and advice..... OH has just come home and informed me that one of his mates is a big IT person, builds computers etc, and websites for people.....
So he's going to come and have a look, but if its not this side of christmas, may give that phone number a try....
Looks like I'll just have to keep using the PC..

i have purchased a new lappy for my daughter and thought i better get it set up and try it out (lol) before she gets it! ..i set everything up ok but like you could not connect to net on laptop. i had to 1st open my bt homehub page and get the hub to search for wireless networks...and hey presto it worked!spanky xx
