Bit of a novice, when it comes to techie stuff...

You can practise and improve your techie stuff skills by taking your mouse to the "Thanks" button at the bottom right hand corner of espresso's postings and pressing on it.

He is giving up his time to assist you. The least you can do, in return, is to thank him.

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

  • I do apologise if I have offended you Leopard, I have done it now, apologies espresso and thanks for your help,

So why did you censor the ipconfig /all output?
Is this Virgin cable or Virgin ADSL?

  • ip address is:- 169.254.30.229
    subnet mask:- 255.25.0.0

but there is nothing in the default gateway

I have tried to ping google.com,
and it comes back unknow host

(i found that on the net)

I've done exactly the same on my pc, and it works

That's better! The 169.254.30.229 IP means that you do not have a valid IP address issued. The default gateway should show the IP address of your router.

What is the make/model of your router.

Edit: Just seen your edit re. cable.

Have you powered down the modem and router and then powered up the modem first, wait for a few minutes and then powered up the router?

  • Sorry, having bad day, been on it all morning, wish I knew what I was doing...

Will try that now and see what happens... fingers crossed..

Just a thought, could I not use the Ip address off my PC..?

The router will issue an IP address using DHCP. This is how the connection is shared between different PC's e.g. your desktop and laptop etc.

DHCP explained here Your router should issue an IP address to each device connected to it e.g. your desktop and now your laptop when connected.

Is your desktop connected to the router using an Ethernet cable? Is that how you are posting on the forum?
Do you have any other cables e.g. USB connected between the modem and PC?

  • Desktop is connected to router via Ethernet cable, so I have pc and laptop side by side at the moment, keep trying to do things on laptop, using wrong keyboard, then click why it's not working..
So yes thats how I'm able to post.

PC has Ethernet cable going into Netgear router
Router has cable going into Modem, and all word brill on PC

    it's just the laptop..

I have a wireless usb stick for laptop, which has all been installed ok,

How do I go about getting a valid IP address, has it's obviously not working on laptop...
