Cally - really sympathise, not much worse than not being able to sleep. I was the same - could fall asleep no problem, it was keeping asleep I couldn't do.

I got my hypnotherapy on the NHS - I did have a very sympathetic doctor and this was some time ago. Is there an alternative therapy centre near you? You might be able to get hypnotherapy from someone training looking for a case study.

Hope you get some relief from somewhere...

(also just realised how old I sound talking about "tapes" when you're all talking about CDs! :o )

My personal tip: I have a Rest and Sleep CD from Meditainment and a pillow speaker from Maplin (at least that's the cheapest I could find quickly) and I've very rarely heard to the end of the track, whether I've used it when I'm first getting into bed or in the wee small worrying hours.

Thanks for that Sue. I've just ordered the pillow speaker (free p+p at the moment) as I have a "Sleep" CD.

cazziebo - I do sleep, I drop off to sleep just fine, I sleep through the night just fine ......

My body is far too active whilst I am asleep, thats the problem.
  • You said earlier that you don't watch TV after 9pm but also worth not using computer for a few hours before bedtime as well I always find if have been on computer I struggle to sleep.
You mention a joint problem are you on any medication for it that may be affecting your sleep? I know you say GP does nothing but even if you are taking herbal or over the counter remedies they may affect your sleep, speak to the pharmacist if you are taking anything and they should be able to give you an idea of whther they could be the cause.
I have lots of sympathy for you lack of sleep is like torture, hopefully some of the idea's on here will help you get a good nights rest.
    Good Luck.
    :D:rolleyes:;):cool::o:rolleyes:;):o:o:cool:

I'm trying to come off the computer earlier (about midnight if not bit before) than normal (half 1 in the morning) this week as working a lot of extra hours (how dare people be off work! Lol).

The only painkillers I'm on are over the counter stuff like paracetomol and migraleve when needed.

I've been on the decaff tea today and feeling more sleepy than normal so maybe thats a good sign of not having caffeine.

Quick puzzler question (lol) - If Tetley Decaff tea bags are decaffinated to 0.2 % .... what are normal tea bags caffinated at ?

Savvy_Sue - the CD looks interesting but no way can I afford $79 to get access to download the sleep ones. I dont have a CD burner on laptop either.
Ah, sorry, I should have said you can get the Rest and Sleep CD from Amazon, for a far more reasonable price! I just thought I was behind the times because I don't do all this downloading malarkey ... :rotfl:

    Hows your pillows?

Not being funny but not having the right pillows for you could be whats keeping you tossing and turning

I hadnt slept for years and lastyear invested in a feather mattress and feather pillows. Now I settle in bed and I dont move all night. You can see where I lay Ive moved that little.

So if your bed is old and uncomfortable and your pillows are needing to be folded and rested on your arm to give you support - then time to change them

I must admit suki, my pillows are awful. We did buy some new ones but they are far too flimsy and thin. I'd love one of those ones that support your head and neck (cant think of name at moment). We're on the lookout for a new bed and mattress as well but have to wait a bit and save up.

    Thanks Savvy_Sue - I'll have a look for it

You just need pillows that fill the space behind your neck. If you are a front sleeper then you only need softer ones, side or back sleeper you need deeper filled ones

I got mine of QVC for a few reasons. A - they were a good price and B, after listening to the sales person talk about what pillows would be best for me, I bought them knowing if they were wrong I could send them back for a full refund.

I also got my feather bed from there - my mattress is a tad too firm for my hips - has made a huge difference being able to sleep on a padding of feathers

four pillows, and a king size feather bed - about £130 in total - buying when on TSVS

I have bought a mouth guard, a boil in the bag type one, as I am a Bruxist (teeth grinder at night) as well. I havent used it yet as I have a big tendancy to gag easily.

If you're lucky, this will be useless.

If you're unlucky it will make matters much worse, and leave you with a strained jaw.

Go and visit your dentist and get a proper one made.

More expensive - yes, but it will be much more comfortable and have a chance of actually helping.

If there is any chance that this may be sleep apnoea though, you really need a proper diagnosis and treatment. Sleep apnoea can have all sorts of bad problems - including a much higher risk of strokes, and the very real danger of death - both your own and other people's - if you fall asleep at the wheel.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
