Could you become a government consultant on this please?

    Treliac if the call comes, I'll take it. I fear, however that;

    1) Since I prefer evidence and logic to cheap headlines and easy solutions, the Government wouldn't be interested and the tabloids would rubbish anything I said.
    2) Since I'm in the "wrong" union for the public sector, and personally opted out of the pension scheme, the Unions wouldn't be too happy about me taking it on.
    3) Since I've been known to get the Megabus to meetings, stay in a B&B, and have a chip butty for dinner, that small minority of senior public sector staff who travel first class, stay in the best hotels, drink deep of the wine list, and then bill the taxpayer, would find a way to sabotage me.

    :)
Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!

plus you are forgetting that many LA now, after being advised by consultants on how to save money, have a freeze on using consultants. :D

Public sector dont get sacked for being useless

They dont do anything ..............ever................ at all

They are surrounded by equally inefficient retards so have no real point of reference as to how to be actually be worthwhile.

They work to invented budgetsthat get re invented if they fail (which they do)

ONLY public service workers claim they do a good job!!! everyone else says 'try that crap in the real world you wont last 5 minutes'

Only public sector workers think 5 minutes takes a fortnight to implement!

I got in this morning at 8.40, I took a 30 minute lunch break & left at 6pm. I worked solidly.
I'm on AL from Monday for two weeks & I have to clear my workload before I start my hols.
I know I work damn fast & motor through it, but we are very under staffed in my area & the workload is massive.
I HATE meetings, pub lunches (I keep a time sheet, so it comes off my hours, not the CT payers money) training, ANYTHING that takes me away from my desk & PC, because I know when I'm not there my workload is growing.

TBH, I'm firefighting trying to keep up with it. I almost dread hols, because I come back to a mountain of work.

Not all public servants twiddle their thumbs.

For the vast majority of private sector workers (many, many who are on minimum wage, don't receive generous holidays, generous pensions, flexitime working or even sick pay) I'd be interested in to know what perks are generally available to us that you don't get. Please advise.

    Christmas bonus;)
    I don't get that:p

    So many incorrect assumptions!!!
Minimum wage - Many council staff are on minimum wage hence the massive outcry when only 2.5% payrise was offered earlier this year. Unions wanted a flat increase so lower paid staff would gain more than higher paid staff. It was refused.
Generous holidays - incorrect again. I am on holiday for 2 weeks over Christmas but have to use 6 days holiday to get it. My office only closes on Xmas day, boxing day, New Year's Day and 2nd Jan(bank hol in Scotland)
Generous pensions - incorrect again. Is something generous if you have to pay for it? It may be good but that's different from generous. Generous sounds like we local goverment staff get it for nothing. I pay almost £50 a week to my pension. Is THAT generous then?
Flexitime working - many private companies now operate flexi time so to claim that it's a benefit that only local government staff get is plain wrong.
Sick pay - Yes we receive sick pay but so do many others in private companies

    We do not get -
Christmas bonus (or any kind of bonus)
Pay rise for doing a good job
Cannot ask boss for a rise
Need to take holidays over Xmas and Easter when most other places are closed.
Company cars or any other kind of incentive
Private health care as part of a job package
Any praise for working FOR idiots like you who have no concept of what local government is like.

I know dozens of people who have left local government and taken jobs in your real world and guess what? They manage to get by and cope with them. Probably because working in local government is just as difficult as your real world.

    • Support from employer. If someone complains about you they don't assume the complainer is correct and launch a full disciplinary hearing even if they know the complaint is malacious.
    • Non regulated time off? i.e. I applied for unpaid leave of absence when told my mother had only weeks to live and wanted to care for her at home. I was told my request had to go to council for approval and the next meeting was in 6 weeks! A friend who works for a bank in a similar predicament had no such issues.
    • Oh and how could I forget. People don't call you sh!te names just because you are a public sector worker:rolleyes:
Like I get fed up of people slagging of the public sector I also get fed up off people in the public sector stating or implying that everyone in the private sector has ever gotten any of these perks.

Just because you hear of one example don't presume that every private sector employee is lucky enough to work in an industry or company that is well regulated.

Most people in the private sector work for small or medium size employers
who either don't give perks or only give them to people over a certain level.

Time off is a problem whatever sector you work in. I know people who have had flooded homes told they can take two days out of their holiday and if they aren't at work after that they will be disciplined for unauthorised absence. (Yes some companies are really that nice.)

And flexible working normally consists of working out what time your employer thinks it's acceptable to turn up and leave the office.

Oh and in the private sector people can also be extremely nasty and vindictive when they have someone who has a complaint against you.

How many holidays do the private sector get, it's a long time since I worked there?
    Depends on the employer.

    1. The statutory minimum including bank holidays.
    2. The statutory minimum excluding bank holidays.
    3. 1-5 days more than the statutory minimum including bank holidays but that's because you regularly work evenings and weekends without time off in lieu.

Due to the interpretation of age discrimination laws it doesn't necessarily increase with the time worked for the company.

Also depending who you work for and your job like with the public sector employees you can find your holiday cancelled at the last moment even if you have worked the weekend before to ensure you can go on it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Yes they do - it's just not widely reported. South Lanarkshire just dismissed several staff for gross misconduct.
They dont do anything ..............ever................ at all
If that was the case then you'd never get to work because there would be no road outside your house. There would be litter EVERYWHERE. Your kids would have no school to go to. Your bin would never be emptied. Would be amazing if council workers actually did SOMETHING then eh?
They are surrounded by equally inefficient retards so have no real point of reference as to how to be actually be worthwhile.
Could only be said by someone who is !!!!!! enough to think council workers do nothing.
They work to invented budgetsthat get re invented if they fail (which they do)
Don't most people work to/within budgets invented by others? And while some fail (as they do in EVERY job) most don't but council workers don't go shouting "yehaa...I completed a job within budget today".
ONLY public service workers claim they do a good job!!! everyone else says 'try that crap in the real world you wont last 5 minutes'
Everyone else who has never worked in public service you mean. Those who have know otherwise.
Only public sector workers think 5 minutes takes a fortnight to implement!
Things can take longer in public sector because we're spending YOUR tax money and it must be done right. You'd complain if the local council only surfaced the roads in one area and ignored the rest. Things must be prioritised and shown to auditors and the public (who are completely free to ask) that the correct business decisions are made.
