Thanks for that constructive post Poppy.
Public sector have been harping on for years about how poorly paid they were but now figures show that the AVERAGE pay is higher. Presumably they take total wagebill in each sector and divide by number of employees.
I don't have detailed information - I didn't do the calcs (and it wasn't the Daily Mail I got info from it was BBC news site. How accurate it is, I dunno???? They're a public body an don't have a vested interest in showing public sector as hiigher paid)
You can't however go on about how badly paid you (ie 'you' as in a group of workers and not 'you a an individual) are and then once numbers show that it's not the case, throw your toys out of the pram and say "show me the comparison job by job".
FWIW those salaries look quite reasonable.0 -

No toy throwing out just asking for comparisons from people who work in the private sector as taking a total wage bill and dividing by the number of people is meaningless as most of the lower paid jobs in LA and HA like cleaners/cooks/refuse collection etc have been outsourced and are provided by the private sector. Therefore you have a larger group of the lower paid workforces in these areas in the private sector as the LA/HA has decided to offload them.
Some jobs you can have a direct comparison of private/public as the jobs exist in both i.e.- teacher
- solicitor
- accountant
- architect
- engineer
- electrician/plumber
- IT staff
- cook
- cleaner
- security

Ok, Ok
You've got me, I put my hands up and concede!
I admit it - Public sector pay is fine, my job is secure and I don't work as hard as all you poorly paid private sector and self employed people who work like slaves all day.
I would suggest that he people who bash the LA club are not in the LA club and really wish they were in the LA club.
Come and join us, but unfortunately the queue to get in may be longer than you expected!0 -

Disagree - one can't even make accurate comparisons between jobs in firms next door to each other - a maintenance manager in Company A could be paid say £20,000 and company B £30,000. Depends on lots of things. Both may be being paid the correct amount for their responsibilities.
I'm off to bed now, the nice man with the white coat has brought me my milky drink and the padded jacket (you know, the one where the arms tie at the back). See you all tomorrow.0 -

that's a bit kinky:DOld_Slaphead wrote:I'm off to bed now, the nice man with the white coat has brought me my milky drink and the padded jacket (you know, the one where the arms tie at the back). See you all tomorrow.
Do you have a straw in your face mask to drink the milk:rotfl:

That one beat me.....and Google!
Yes I was being frivolous as NDG is frankly the only Jewish person I know with Welsh-speaking ancestors (perhaps she's a direct descendant of Joseph of Arimethia and my mad British Israelist friend at university was right all along?).
In reality, the Welsh spelling of Hanukkah is, er, Hanukkah. Next I'll find out they don't really play snwcr.Hurrah, now I have more thankings than postings, cheers everyone!0 -
My other half is Jewish and Israeli. My ancestry, for the last 400 years or so, includes only people from Wales, England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
We do keep a Kosher-ish house, but I am not Jewish....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
now I'm confused. How can you then say that public sector workers are better paid than private sector workers if you are saying that you can't even make accurate comparisons between jobs in the private sector?
If you read my posting it says that the AVERAGE pay in public sector is higher than in private - presumably you understand the meaning of average (it's one number divided into another and is meant to iron out all the ups and downs to show an overall picture).
Anyway, I didn't do the calcs - they're from the Office for National Statistics (and they wouldn't lie would they ???). See paragraph 10 in Times article - apparently average pay public £27000 private £24000. Nice work if you can get it.

There are other stories in Mail and Telegraph but I assumed you'd think that was Tory propaganda.
ps love the gear - is that your LA uniform (not sure why a straw would be needed ???) Wish I'd now made more effort with my job app! I'll deffo see "public service" in a different light now.
Oh, one other thing, it can't be that enticing in private sector or how come whenever any public sector department get's "threatened" with being transferred to private sector there's howls of protest, strike threats etc etc from unions & staff ?? I think you appreciate which side your bread's buttered on.
Ok, some employees from a few big companies get decent T&Cs (mostly ex nationalised utilities which still have the old CS mentality and banks) but the vast majority of SMEs get nothing like the decent deals that many in the public sector get. Don't believe the papers when you see all this stuff about big bonuses etc - it's only a tiny, tiny minority mostly in London that get them. The rest of us get the semi-permanent threat of short-time working or redundancy to look forward to.0 -
Is it not simply the case that in the private sector the risks of gain and loss are greater, whereas the public sector jobs are safer and perhaps a bit boring and less well paid.
Its just a question of whether you prefer the risk or the boredom.
Boredom rocks!0
