Is there something wrong with my electricity meter?

sorry a PS,
OWLs are £20 now at my B&Q gives a great visual of your usage and cost..0 -
I am doing a bit more testing now, and have been using the imeasure site.
I have calculated (again) what usage everything (inc lights, fridge, computers, tv, etc...) except water heater + oven SHOULD be using. This comes to approx 3kw/day (give or take a few hundred watts).
So with an average usage of 11kwh/day that means 8kwh for the water heater + oven.
I am still not using the water heater 24/7, and no i dont have economy 7, and i cant change the meter as this place is rented. The heater is 3kwh, so for the 1.5hrs that is 4.5kwh, therefore my oven is using 3.5kwh/day (i use it for approx 40mins a day). Does this seem correct?
Oh and the water really isn't very hot. The water heater should be heated for 3hrs to get up to temp... but i am not doing that as that is £1.25 per day for one 5-10minute shower!
[edit] i have been looking around at oven power consumption (!), and it appears that new AEG ovens use approx 800w/hour with fan on. So as mine is 4yrs old or so, and probably less efficient, 1.5kwh might be a good guess power wise?
Therefore that gives 3 + 4.5 + 1.5 = 9... which means i am losing 2kw somewhere!
and yes... i am over analysing this ever so slightly0 -
I don't know how you calculate things like water heating. Once the water is at temp, the heater should just cut in and out while it's on so your 4.5kwh is probably an overestimate. Same for your oven.
Our fridge and freezer (both large) use a couple kwh a day. Lights, well, average 20w x 10 for 3 hours = 600w (very rough approx) so another kwh probably. That's three for us before TVs and Sky (a kwh), Xbox (another kwh) and laptops, radios, security light etc (a kwh max). So, before laundry etc I think we use 6kwh. We've never used below 8kwh in a day though!
Once we add in the washing machine and dishwasher (most days), tumble drier (winter) and iron, and maybe some kitchen gadgets, we're up to about 13 units a day. !6 or 17 this time of year with a dehumidifier running.0 -
I forgot the electric hob... so most of the extra is probably that, as it uses much more power than the oven.
Here is a break down of costs for significant electrical items!
- Water heater: 135kwh - £20
- Oven+hob: 105kwh - £15
- Fridge: 35kwh - £5
- Computer: 15kwh - £2 (8hrs/day)
- Lights: 13kwh - £2 (8hrs/day)
- TV: 12kwh - £1.75 (4hrs/day)
- Laptop: 6kwh - £0.90 (8hrs/day)
- Router: 3.5kwh - £0.50
- HiFi: 2kwh - £0.29 (5hrs/day)
Those are approx prices, rounded up and down to make nice numbers, but they are effectively correct. It does show that the toys (computers, tv) are relatively insignificant though!0
