Is there something wrong with my electricity meter?

  • I have just sent an email to OSO asking them what the most energy efficient way of using their heater is... so we shall see what they say :)

Looking at the brochure for the heater i have it says it takes 175mins to heat up properly, so that's nearly 3hrs, and 9kw (£1.25) to properly heat up. However, it also says it has a daily energy loss of 2kw. So i am not sure whether that means that once heated (and if running 24/7... no timer) that it would cost only 2kw a day to heat up.

[edit] the email address i found just bounced the email back!
[edit2] now i have sent it to all the addresses i can find :p

What it means is that if you used no hot water at all, it would need 2kWh to replace the heat lost from the tank.

Of course in reality that heat is not 'lost' as it warms the fabric of the property.

Obviously the more water you use, the more energy taken to heat that water.
  • To me it is looking like keeping it on 24hrs and ignoring the timer is the way to go. It's probably like to use less than the current 4.5kWh to keep it all ticking over i would think. I only really use hot water for 1 shower, and washing up!

You say that you cannot afford the £25 for the energy monitor. But you are apparently prepared to pay over the odds for your showers. You are not being logical. If you do not find the cause of the problem then you will go on paying out indefinitely. You have to find a way of paying the £25. It will turn out to be a good investment. If you do not get the result that you are looking for from the supplier, then you should make every effort to get hold of a monitor.
I can afford anything that I want.

One thing to note (but probably not relevant now you are going to 24hr water heating) is that off peak electricity is only available to those who have off peak meters - have a look at yours and either you will have 2 meters or one which extra wires coming out of it and 'teleswitch' marked on it.

? I never said anything like that!

I am not sure i am able to install a monitor here as it's a rental flat and the meters for about 10 flats are all in one room away from my one.

From what i can see i don't have economy 7, though i could be wrong. I will double check :)

your water heating will be the majority of this daily usage...... record your reading before putting your water heating on for an hour to get a rough idea as to how much its using....ask to go on e7 (if you have a two rate meter) and heat the water at night, with what your using, even though the day rates on e7 are more expensive, youll probably see the benefit through the amount you use on water heating alone.

how "hot" is your hot water and is the tank lagged... double lagging can help and if the immersion has not been adjusted it ma need turning down.....
I,ve been to some peoples houses and their water has been volcano hot...

hot enough not to your hand under should be enough...

there should be a small dial atop the tank but turn it off to adjust it anyhow, just to be safe.....
