Is there something wrong with my electricity meter?
I just got an electricity bill from EON today for £290. This is for 17 weeks, and so works out at over £70 a month. According to my meter i am using 18units a day, however, i can't see how this can be true.
I live in a 1 bed new flat, on my own. I have no dishwasher, washing machine, or kettle, and dont use heating... The only significant electrical items other than lighting are:
- Computer (12hrs a day, no screen)
- Hifi amp
- TV (5hrs max)
- Laptop (always plugged in, used 12hrs a day max)
- Oven
- Fridge
- Water heating (4hrs a day)
- Toaster!
As you can see, there isn't much there, and i work during the day, so am only home in the evenings and at the weekend. I am also very careful with turning things off when i am not using them.
Looking at my electrical bill for my last house (oven and heating were gas), i was using 6units a day MAX), now i appear to be using 3x that.
Do you think there is an issue somewhere, or does 18units a day seem correct for my level of usage?
Thanks

i hope you are heating the water on E7 overnight else its no wonder its so high!
All our water is elec heated overnight on E7 (its still hot enough for a bath at 11pm the evening after) and we pay £38 per month and use washing machine, dishwasher & tumbler through the day as they wake me up at night.0 -
Isn't much there. 4 hours water heating. Hmm. Why? An hour a day would probably be enough for a small family, less for a couple. How hot is the water when it comes out of the tap? Hot or scalding?
Assuming you have gas or oil heating.
TV - what type and size?0 -
It's actually on for just over 3hrs, and if i dont do this the hot water doesn't last very long! What i should probably do is have the water heated over night for a few hours.
TV is a 26inch LCD.0 -
Sounds as if there's something wrong with your immersion heater or it isn't properly insulated. We used to have ours on for less than an hour overnight and there would be enough for a bath in the evening.0

No, i dont have the radiators on as i am on the 12th floor, and everyone else heats my flat for me :T0 -
I live in a one bedroom all electric flat, and I pay £80 a month, and my account is in debit!... And I dont have a laptop and pc running all day!!!
Doesnt sound like there is anything wrong with your meter.Sunny in Southampton.0 -
18 units a day is a lot but probably not out of order if you are heating enough water for several flats.0

With heating for that long i can get 2 showers, maybe 3... then it's out of hot water. Maybe my heater is broken?0

If you left a 200w home server on round the clock it'd cost you about £200 a year in electricity. (£175.20 @ 10p/kwh)
If you have to have a PC on alot, get an Atom based Laptop and shut the lid. The Intel Atom CPU draws only 2 watts under load. I use one to run a Mailserver / PABX.0
